Physics Assignment Chapter 1 (Part 2) –

Electrostatics

Student Name: ____________________ Class: ____________________ Date:

____________________ Instructions: Attempt all questions. Show all necessary working where
required. This assignment is based on Chapter 1 (Part 2) – Electrostatics.

Section A: Short Questions

1. Define electrostatics.

Answer: Electrostatics is the branch of physics that deals with the study of electric charges at rest
and the forces between them.

2. What is meant by electric charge?

Answer: Electric charge is a physical property of matter that causes it to experience a force when
placed in an electric field.

3. State Coulomb’s law.

Answer: Coulomb’s law states that the force between two point charges is directly proportional to
the product of their charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

4. What is an electric field?

Answer: An electric field is the region around a charged object where it exerts a force on another
charge.
Section B: Numerical Problems

5. Two charges of 2 µC and 4 µC are placed 3 m apart. Find the force between them.

Answer:
Given: q1 = 2 × 10■■ C, q2 = 4 × 10■■ C, r = 3 m
Using Coulomb’s law: F = k(q1q2 / r²)
F = (9 × 10■)(2 × 10■■ × 4 × 10■■) / 9
F = 8 × 10■³ N

6. Find the electric field at a point 2 m away from a charge of 5 µC.

Answer:
E = kq / r²
E = (9 × 10■ × 5 × 10■■) / 4
E = 1.125 × 10■ N/C
Section C: Long Questions

7. Explain the concept of electric field lines and their properties.

Answer:
Electric field lines are imaginary lines drawn to represent the direction of an electric field. They
originate from positive charges and terminate on negative charges. They never intersect and the
density of lines indicates the strength of the electric field.

8. Describe the charging by induction process.

Answer:
Charging by induction is the method of charging a neutral object without direct contact. A charged
object is brought near the neutral object, causing the charges in the neutral object to rearrange. By
grounding the object, excess charges flow away, leaving the object charged when the ground is
removed.
