DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
How to engage in descriptive writing?
Writing a strong descriptive passage for IGCSE requires vivid imagery, sensory details, and precise
vocabulary. Steps to craft an engaging and high-scoring descriptive passage:
1. Choose a Clear Topic
Select a setting, person, object, or experience that allows for rich description. Example topics:
A bustling marketplace
A stormy night
An abandoned house
A childhood memory
2. Engage the Five Senses
Your writing should make the reader see, hear, smell, taste, and feel the scene. Use:
Visual details (color, shape, light, shadow)
Sounds (whispering winds, bustling crowds)
Smells (freshly baked bread, salty sea air)
Taste (sweetness of ripe mangoes, bitterness of coffee)
Touch (rough bark, silky fabric)
Example: Instead of "The beach was nice," write "Golden sunlight danced on the waves as the salty breeze
kissed my skin."
3. Use Literary Devices
Improve descriptions with:
Similes – “The moon hung like a silver coin in the sky.”
Metaphors – “The trees were sentinels, guarding the ancient forest.”
Personification – “The wind howled through the trees.”
Alliteration – “The whispering waves washed the weary shore.”
4. Show, Don’t Tell
Instead of directly stating emotions, show them through actions and descriptions.
He was scared.
☞Type equation here .His hands trembled, and his breath came in quick, shallow gasps.
5. Use a Variety of Sentence Structures
Mix short, impactful sentences with longer, flowing ones.
Short sentence: Silence. A shadow moved.
Longer sentence: The narrow alley, damp from the evening drizzle, twisted and turned like a
serpent disappearing into the unknown.
6. Maintain a Clear Focus & Structure
✔ Introduction: Set the scene immediately.
✔ Development: Use sensory details & literary devices.
✔ Conclusion: Leave a lasting impression (a strong image, final thought, or emotion).
7. Edit & Improve
Cut unnecessary words.
Replace weak adjectives (e.g., nice → breathtaking, terrifying, serene).
Read aloud to check the flow.
MODEL ANSWER
A Stormy Night
The sky, once a calm canvas of twilight blue, now boiled with rolling clouds, thick and swollen with rage. A
jagged bolt of lightning tore across the heavens, illuminating the world in a ghostly flash before vanishing
into darkness. The wind howled like a wounded beast, rattling the windowpanes and sending fallen leaves
spiralling through the drenched streets.
Rain pounded against the earth, each drop a tiny hammer drumming against rooftops and pavements. The
scent of wet soil filled the air, mingling with the sharp, electric tang of the storm. In the distance, the sea
roared, its waves crashing hungrily against the rocks, their white crests illuminated briefly with each flicker
of lightning.
Huddled inside, I felt the cold seep through the walls, my fingers curled around a warm mug of cocoa. Each
clap of thunder sent a shiver through my spine, yet there was a strange beauty in the chaos outside—a wild,
untamed symphony of nature’s fury.
