GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Physical Education plays an important role in the overall development of students. It
improves physical fitness, mental health, discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Games and sports help students stay active and develop leadership qualities. This
assignment explains the rules, ground measurements, and diagrams of five popular
games as prescribed in the CBSE Class X syllabus.
PAGE 1 – FOOTBALL
Introduction
Football is one of the most popular outdoor games in the world. It requires speed,
stamina, coordination, and teamwork. The game is played between two teams with the
objective of scoring goals.
Basic Rules (Any Five)
1. A football match is played between two teams of 11 players each, including one
goalkeeper.
2. The match is divided into two halves of 45 minutes each with a short interval.
3. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to use hands and only within the penalty area.
4. A goal is awarded when the whole ball crosses the goal line between the
goalposts.
5. Fouls and misconduct may result in free kicks, penalty kicks, or yellow/red
cards.
Ground Measurements
• Length: 100–110 metres
• Width: 64–75 metres
• Goal post size: 7.32 m (width) × 2.44 m (height)
• Penalty area: 16.5 metres from the goal line
• Centre circle radius: 9.15 metres

Introduction
Cricket is a widely played team sport in India. It develops hand-eye coordination,
concentration, and team spirit. The game is played using a bat and ball between two
teams.
Basic Rules (Any Five)
1. Each team consists of 11 players.
2. The game is played on a pitch with two sets of wickets.
3. An over consists of 6 legal balls bowled by the same bowler.
4. The batting team scores runs by hitting the ball and running between wickets.
5. A batsman can be out by methods such as bowled, caught, LBW, or run-out.
Ground Measurements
• Pitch length: 22 yards (20.12 metres)
• Pitch width: 10 feet (3.05 metres)
• Distance between wickets: 22 yards
• Boundary distance: 65–70 metres (approx.)

Introduction
Volleyball is a popular indoor and outdoor game played with a net. It improves agility,
reflexes, and cooperation among players.
Basic Rules (Any Five)
1. Each team has 6 players on the court at a time.
2. A team is allowed only three contacts to return the ball.
3. A match is played in the best of five sets.
4. Each set is won by scoring 25 points with a lead of at least 2 points.
5. The ball must pass over the net without touching the ground.
Court Measurements
• Court length: 18 metres
• Court width: 9 metres
• Net height: 2.43 m (boys) and 2.24 m (girls)
• Attack line distance: 3 metres from the net

Introduction
Basketball is a fast-paced indoor game that requires speed, strength, accuracy, and
teamwork. The objective is to score points by shooting the ball into the opponent’s
basket.
Basic Rules (Any Five)
1. Each team has 5 players on the court.
2. The match is played in four quarters.
3. Players must dribble the ball while moving.
4. A field goal scores 2 or 3 points, and a free throw scores 1 point.
5. Illegal physical contact is considered a foul.
Court Measurements
• Court length: 28 metres
• Court width: 15 metres
• Basket height: 3.05 metres
• Free throw line distance: 4.6 metres from the basket

Introduction
Badminton is a racket sport played either as singles or doubles. It improves speed,
balance, flexibility, and concentration.
Basic Rules (Any Five)
1. The game can be played as singles or doubles.
2. A match consists of best of three games.
3. Each game is played for 21 points.
4. The shuttlecock must pass over the net and land within the court.
5. A player can hit the shuttle only once before it crosses the net.

• Court width: 6.1 metres (doubles)
• Net height at posts: 1.55 metres
• Net height at centre: 1.524 metres
