Women have always played an important role in society. History shows that when women are given
opportunities, they can achieve great things. Look at the pictures and see how women perform different
jobs.

Reading and Understanding

Pakistani Women as Role Models

History is full of role models—men, women, and children—who teach us how to be good parents,
teachers, friends, and students. Women in Pakistan have always played an important role in supporting
society. They are equal to men in spirit, hard work, and achievements. Their positive qualities help build
a strong and successful nation. In this lesson, we will learn about four Pakistani women who have made
history and inspired others.

Miss Fatima Jinnah was the younger sister of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. She was born in 1893
and had a strong interest in education, which helped her complete her studies. She worked as a dentist
but later gave up her profession to help her brother in the Pakistan Movement. She inspired many
Muslim women and formed the Women’s Relief Committee, which later became the All Pakistan
Women’s Association. Because of her untiring efforts, she earned the title “Madar-e-Millat” (Mother of
the Nation). Think: How do you think her efforts helped women in Pakistan? She passed away in Karachi
on July 8, 1967.

Dr. Ruth Pfau was a German doctor and nun, known as the Mother Teresa of Pakistan. She devoted her
life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan and established 150 clinics across the country. Thanks to her work, the
disease came under control in 1996. She received many awards for her services, including Hilal-e-Imtiaz
and Hilal-e-Pakistan. Reflect: What qualities do you think helped Dr. Ruth Pfau succeed in her mission?

Arfa Abdul Karim Randhawa became the pride of Pakistan at the age of nine when she became the
world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional. She represented Pakistan at international technology
events and even flew her first aircraft at the age of ten. Sadly, she passed away on January 14, 2012, at
the age of sixteen. Think: How can a young person like Arfa inspire other children to work hard and
achieve their goals?

Samina Khayal Baig is the first Pakistani woman to climb Mount Everest and the first Muslim woman to
climb all Seven Summits. Born on September 19, 1990, she comes from Shimshal village in Hunza. Her
brother supported her mountaineering career, and she has climbed several other peaks, including
Chashkin Sar and Koh-i-Brobar. Reflect: What does Samina’s story teach us about courage and
perseverance?
