Philippine Constitution & Bill of Rights

I. The Constitution

 Definition: The Constitution is the supreme law of the land — it is the highest legal authority
from which all other laws derive their power.
 Purpose:
o Establishes the framework of government.
o Divides powers among branches to prevent abuse.
o Ensures that laws and actions conform to constitutional principles.
 Supremacy Clause:
o The Constitution is above all other laws.
o Any law or act inconsistent with it is invalid.
o Ensures that all government actions are constitutional.

II. Branches of Government (Separation of Powers)

1. Legislative Branch – makes laws.


2. Executive Branch – enforces laws.
3. Judicial Branch – interprets laws and ensures they follow the Constitution.
o This branch safeguards constitutional supremacy.

III. The Bill of Rights (Article III)

 Purpose: To limit government power and protect individual freedoms.


 Covers:
o Right to life, liberty, and property
o Freedom of speech, press, religion, and assembly
o Right to due process and equal protection
o Right to privacy and protection from unlawful searches
