I. WHAT ARE CHILD RIGHTS?
Child rights are basic rights that all children must receive. These are divided into four categories:
1. Survival Rights
Right to food, shelter, clean water, and health care.
2. Rights
Right to education, play, and opportunities to develop skills and talents.
3. Protection Rights
Right to be protected from abuse, neglect, exploitation, discrimination, and violence.
4. Participation Rights
Right to express opinions and take part in decisions that affect them.
II. CHILD PROTECTION LAWS IN THE PHILIPPINES
Here are important laws that protect children:
* RA 7610 – Special Protection of Children
Protects children from abuse, exploitation, child labor, and trafficking.
* RA 9262 – Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children
Protects children from physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, and economic abuse in the family.
* RA 9208 – Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act
Prohibits trafficking of children for labor, prostitution, or online exploitation.
* RA 9344 – Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act
Protects children in conflict with the law and focuses on rehabilitation instead of punishment.
* RA 10630 – Improving the Juvenile Justice System
Strengthens child-friendly procedures and Bahay Pag-asa centers for children in conflict with the law.
* RA 10175 – Cybercrime Prevention Act
Protects children from cyberbullying, online harassment, grooming, and sexual exploitation.
III. COMMON CHILD RIGHTS VIOLATIONS
Child labor
Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
Neglect and lack of basic needs
Bullying and cyberbullying
Forced or child marriage
IV. HOW TO PROTECT CHILDREN
Family – provide love, guidance, safety, and basic needs.
School – ensure a safe environment and prevent bullying.
Community – report abuse and support child protection programs.
Government – enforce child protection laws and provide services.
