CRE Tutorial 3

This tutorial covers various questions related to chemical reaction engineering, focusing on reaction kinetics and conversions in batch and continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTR). It includes calculations for conversion rates, maximum concentration of products, and rate equations for different reaction orders. The questions involve both first-order and second-order reactions with varying initial concentrations and conditions.

Chemical Reaction Engineering

Tutorial – 3 17/08/23

Instructor: - Dr. Tarak Mondal

Ques.1 For the reaction A →R, second-order kinetics and CA0 = 1
mol/litre, we get 50% conversion after 1 hour in a batch reactor.
What will be the conversion and concentration of A after 1 hour if
CA0= 10 mol/litre?
Ques.2 The following liquid phase reaction is taking place in an
isothermal batch reactor A →B→C. Reaction A to B is of 1st Order
with rate constant k1 while the reaction B to C is zeroth order with
rate constant k2.
Feed consists of only A with initial concentration 1 mol/litre.
Calculate the time at which the concentration of B will reach its
maximum value.
Ques.3 For the decomposition A →R, CA0 = 1 mol/litre, in a batch
reactor conversion is 75% after 1hour, and is just complete after 2
hours. Find a rate equation to represent this kinetics.
Ques.4 The following liquid phase second order reaction is carried
out in an isothermal CSTR at steady state A →R, -rA = 0.005CA2
mol/[Link] where, CA is the concentration of reactant in the CSTR. The
reactor volume is 2 m3, the inlet flow rate is 0.5 m3/hr and the inlet
concentration of the reactant is 1000 mol/[Link] the fractional
conversion at the exit.
