Core Method Design

The document outlines the processes and core designs of mixed methods research, emphasizing the integration of quantitative and qualitative data. It describes three main designs: Convergent, Explanatory Sequential, and Exploratory Sequential, each with distinct approaches to data collection and analysis. The document provides key steps for conducting mixed methods studies, including data integration and the development of insights from the combined results.

Mixed Methods Research:

Processes and Core Designs

THE PROCESS OF CONDUCTING
A MIXED METHODS STUDY
THE PROCESS OF CONDUCTING A MIXED METHODS STUDY
Key Points
1. Connect quantitative and qualitative data to a specific mixed
methods design.
2. Draw a diagram that shows how the design works.
3. Integrate the two databases after separate analysis.
4. Present the integration using a table or joint display.
5. Develop insights or metainferences from the integrated
results.
STEP 1: CONNECT QUANTITATIVE AND
QUALITATIVE DATA TO A SPECIFIC MIXED
METHODS DESIGN
Mixed methods always starts with two kinds of data:
Quantitative data – This is numerical, closed-ended
information.
Examples include test scores, survey ratings, measurements,
or statistics.
Qualitative data – This is open-ended, descriptive
information.
Examples are interviews, observations, focus group
discussions, or written narratives.
Example: ‘Why do students struggle with online
learning?’
You might collect:
Quantitative: test scores, frequency of log-ins
Qualitative: interview responses explaining their study
habits or challenges
CONVERGENT MIXED METHODS DESIGN
-is a type of mixed methods research where the researcher:
1. Collects quantitative data
2. Collects qualitative data
3. At the same time (parallel data collection)
4. Analyzes them separately
5. Then brings the two datasets together to compare, confirm, or
expand findings.

QUALITATIVE DATA TO A SPECIFIC MIXED

1. CONVERGENT MIXED METHODS DESIGN
A one-phase design where quantitative and
qualitative data are collected simultaneously,
analyzed separately, and later merged for
comparison.
1. CONVERGENT DESIGN (ONE-PHASE DESIGN)

2. EXPLANATORY SEQUENTIAL MIXED METHODS DESIGN
A two-phase design starting with quantitative data,
followed by qualitative data to explain or elaborate
the quantitative findings.

3. EXPLORATORY SEQUENTIAL MIXED METHODS DESIGN
A three-phase design beginning with qualitative
exploration to develop or refine a quantitative
instrument, variable, or intervention—followed by
quantitative testing.

SUMMARY
CONVERGENT DESIGN
Simultaneous data collection
Merge & compare
Best for confirmation
EXPLANATORY SEQUENTIAL
Quant → Qual
Qual explains Quant
Best for explaining unexpected results
EXPLORATORY SEQUENTIAL
Qual → Quant
Qual builds Quant tool
Best for developing instruments or interventions
