Discussion Text is a genre of writing that presents two different viewpoints

regarding an issue or problem, namely supporting arguments (pros) and opposing


arguments (cons).
The following are the structure and essential elements of a discussion text:
1. Generic Structure
 Issue: Introduces the problem or topic that will be discussed.
 Supporting Points (Pro): Contains points and reasons that support the
issue.
 Contrastive Points (Contra): Contains points and reasons that disagree with
or oppose the issue.
 Conclusion/Recommendation: Contains a summary of both sides and often
includes a middle ground or the author's opinion.
2. Language Features
 Using General Nouns: Using common nouns such as alcohol, smoking,
or technology.
 Using Relating Verbs: Examples: is, are, feel.
 Using Conjunctions: To show contrast, such as however, on the other
hand, but, or nevertheless.
 Using Modalities: Words such as must, should, could, or may.
 Using Adverbs of Manner: Examples: hopefully, deliberately.
3. Examples of Discussion Topics
 The use of AI in schools.
 The impact of social media on teenagers.
 The implementation of school uniforms for students.
The main purpose of this text is to provide objective information to readers so they
can understand an issue from various perspectives before making a decision.
