Module 5 Learning Log: Exploring careers and developing

career intelligence
Instructions
You can use this document as a template for the self-assessment log activity: Exploring careers and
developing career intelligence. To do this, click on “File” in the toolbar and “Make a copy,” or download
from the assignment link. For credit for your self-assessment log reflection, type your answers in this
document and submit to your instructor through the Module 5 assignment link.

Additionally, as noted earlier, I recommend that you save every BUS 109 self-assessment log in one
folder and include a date in the file name to help you stay organized. After you finish your self-
assessment log entry, you can come back and reread your responses later to understand how your
opinions have changed or developed, and to help inform the writing of your final reflection paper.

Date:3/2/2025 Topic: Exploring careers and developing career intelligence

Self- After accessing the [Link] website (link)—which consists of short

Assessment (approximately 2-3 minute) informational interviews with professionals—you are
instructions asked to “Explore Careers” (click on first tab near the top of the website) by:

The results will be the basis of the reflection questions below.

Reflection: Write at least 2-3 sentences in response to each of the questions.

Questions and 1. Reflect on the results of the previous module on “Discovering occupations that
responses: match your personal attributes.” Based on any career(s) that resonated or
stuck out to you, choose a career title(s) that looks interesting to you to watch
a short video with a professional discussing their experience occupying the
career. What career title(s) did you choose, and what are your top 1-2 take-
away (e.g., insight) from the video?
Type your response here.
I chose Art, and I watched a video about Brittany who is a Production Designer
with Journey Group. She talked about how her company gets hired by people to
create products/images for them and how she tends to work with causes that she
is passionate about and does photography freelance work.

2. After clicking on the “Get Hired” near the top of the [Link]
website, you will see videos on topics such as “Build your network,” “Prepare
for an interview.” Choose any category that is of interest to you to watch a
short video on the topic. What topic did you choose, and what are your top 1-2
take-aways (e.g., insight) from the video?
Type your response here.
I watched a video called “Job Searching 101” under the “Search for a Job /
Internship” topic. Much of what the people interviewed in this video talked about
was that you should make sure you are getting into an environment that you fit into
and that you should ask people who work at the job already hard questions to get
honest answers like “Do you see yourself here in 5 years?”

3. Click on the “Video Library” tab near the top of the [Link]
website. Choose any video that looks potentially interesting to you. What
title(s) did you choose, and what are your top 1-2 take-aways (e.g., insight)
from the video?
Type your response here.

I watched a video about a graphic designer named Chris who works from home.
She helps her clients with print work and works with them to communicate their
goals and their products.

Summary: Write 4-5 sentences or one paragraph.

Summarize some of the key insights from exploring careers and developing your
career intelligence through [Link]. What are careers and topics that
came up in exploring this website for you? What points did you agree or disagree
with? You may also want to discuss what points from the videos were surprising
or interesting to you and why.

I explored a lot of graphic design topics through this website. A surprising point I
had explored in the topic “Search for a Job / Internship” was that something you
should be considering when looking for a job is the environment you’ll be in and
the chemistry you’d have with your peers. I agree that it’s an important thing to
consider and not something I had really thought about being important since I
would’ve just taken any job that had good pay and benefits.

When you are ready to post your summary to the discussion board, click on
the Module 5 Discussion link and Start a New Thread. In the subject field of your
initial post and your replies, use a word or phrase that summarizes your posting.
Aim to create and post your initial discussion within the first three days of the
module opening. Reply to at least one of your classmates. Note that to read and
reply to your classmates’ threads, you need to first start a thread.
