The CHP216B Project 2024 focuses on exploring alternative energy sources to support national grid electricity generation and mitigate load shedding. Students are required to investigate various technologies, including solar, geothermal, fuel cells, nuclear, and photovoltaic, while addressing their role in energy security, backup power reliability, energy storage, and their advantages and limitations. The project includes a structured rubric for evaluation, emphasizing teamwork and individual contributions.

CHP216B Project 2024

Total marks = 100

Due date: 18 October 2024 at 9am
Fuels and energy are essential needs of human civilization after food, water, and air. It is
expected that the world’s fossil-fuel reserves may not be able to cater to the energy
demands of the exponentially growing population for much longer. Therefore, there is an
increasing need to ensure future energy security and a sustainable environment in many
countries. Energy security is defined as ‘‘the uninterrupted availability of energy sources
at an affordable price” by the International Energy Agency (IEA).

NB: The goal of this assignment serves as an individual learning project; however, a 6
containing member group can be formed.

Explore the following topics as alternative additional energy sources to aid the national
grid electricity generation to overcome/end load shedding.
• Solar technology (Group 1 – 4)
• Geothermal technology (Group 4 -8)
• Fuel Cells technology (Group 9– 12)
• Nuclear technology (Group 12 - 16)
• Photovoltaic technology (Group 17 – 20)

In your reporting, elaborate on the following:

• Nuclear, Solar, Fuel cells, etc as part of the country’s strategy to improve the
flexibility of the electrical grid and ease the impact of loadshedding. (10)
• Backup Power: Can these alternative energy sources serve as reliable backup
power sources for critical infrastructure? (10)
• Energy storage system. Allocation to store excess energy when it's available and
release it during peak demand times, reducing the need for load shedding. (10)
• Advantages and limitations of alternative energy sources, i.e., costs, adoption, or
application, etc. (10)
• Given each topic, as a team, what’s your take home message about your topic?
How does it relate to you and Chemical Engineering? (10)
Rubric
Cover page (detailing all members details, ie., student number, surname and initials,
signature, group number, project title and submission date). (2)
Abstract/Summary of your research in relation to your topic (10)
Introduction (10)
Literature review (12)
Answer the questions posed. (50)
Conclusions (10)
