Unit 1 Module 1
Life Starts Small
Earth Origin Story:
Earth formed 4.6B years ago
Prokaryotes were the first life form
Cooling of the Universe resulted in the conversion of energy into subatomic particles
Hydrogen the first element
Elements react in the stars to form new elements. Those stars burn out and die with passion
(supernova) to create even more elements
The elements clump up together, and with volcanic activity both land and atmosphere
Living organism are made of matter:
Four main elements Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen make up almost everything
Trace elements are Calcium (Ca), Potassium (K), Phosphorus (P), Sulfur (S)
All form of life shares common properties
Cellular Organization
Reproduction
They grow and develop
They react to stimulation
Metabolism (Energy Processing)
Internal Regulation (Homeostasis & Antistasis)
Evolutionary adaptation (Heredity)
Cell Theory:
Cells are structural and functional units of life
Cells only arise from preexisting cells
Cells respond to their environment
Cells take and use energy
Pasteur proved with his experiments that there was no spontaneous production of life
The cell is the smallest unit that has all the properties of life
Cells are self-replicating chemical systems that communicate with the environment
Cell Theory Repercussions:
Unit 1 Module 1
Life’s processes involve the expression of genetic information (DNA)
The unit if life (Cells) are based on DNA
GENE
Are the united if inheritance that transmits information from parents to offspring
Are grouped into long DNA chains and control the activities of a cell
Are grouped into very long DNA molecules called chromosomes
The diversity of life comes from very small changes in our DNA
Unifying Theory:
Evolution accounts for life’s dual nature of relating and diversifying
All species has a decent to a common ancestor
As differences accumulate through generation species diverge from their ancestors
Evolution is the central organizing principle of biology (Natural Selection)
Charles Darwin Called it “Decent with Modification”
