Assignment 4

The document is an assignment for the course AML364 Advanced Mechanics of Solids from the Department of Applied Mechanics at V.N.I.T., Nagpur, detailing various problems related to three-hinged parabolic arches. It includes seven questions requiring calculations of horizontal thrust, bending moments, axial forces, and shear forces under different loading conditions. The assignment is to be submitted by October 6, 2025, and specifies the use of A4 pages written on both sides.

Note: Write on A4 pages and use both sides.

Q.1 A symmetric three-hinged parabolic arch has a span of 30 m and a central rise of
6 m. The arch carries a uniformly distributed load of 20 kN/m throughout the
span. Determine
(a) The horizontal thrust at the abutments (i.e. at supports A and B).
(b) Maximum positive bending moment in the arch.
(c) Axial Force diagram.

Q.2 A three-hinged parabolic arch of span 20 m and rise 8 m carries a UDL of 40

kN/m over the left half span.
Find out:
(a) Reactions and resultant reactions.
(b) The bending moment, horizontal thrust, and radial shear at a section 8 m
from the left hinge.
(c) The maximum negative and positive bending moments and draw the BMD.

Q.3 A three-hinged parabolic arch of span 33 m and rise 7 m carries a UDL of 45 kN/m
over the whole span and a point load of 250 kN at 7 m distance from the right end.
Find the horizontal thrust at support, bending moment, normal thrust and radial
shear at a section 5 m from the left support.

Q.4 A three-hinged parabolic arch of span 20 m has its crown 9 m high from the left
support and 4 m high from the right support. The crown of the arch is at a
horizontal distance of 12 m from the left support. The arch is subjected to a
uniformly distributed load of 24 kN/m over a length of 12 m from the right
support. Find the normal thrust, radial shear and bending moment at a distance of
4 m from the right support.

Q.5 A three-hinged parabolic arch of 20 m span has abutments at unequal levels. The
crown of the arch is 4 m above the left abutment and 9 m above from the right
abutment. The arch is subjected to a point load of 60 kN at 4 m from the left support
and another point load of 30 kN at 6 m from the right support.
Calculate the horizontal thrust and the bending moment under the loads.

Q.6 A three-hinged parabolic arch has a span of 20 m and central rise of 4 m. It carries
two concentrated loads of 20 kN and 32 kN at a distance of 3 m and 7 m
respectively from the left support, and a UDL of 20 kN/m over the right half
portion. Determine:
(a) The reactions and resultant reactions at the supports,
(b) The moment, normal thrust, and radial shear at a section 5 m from the left
support,
(c) The maximum positive bending moment in span BC

Q.7 Draw BMD and vertical SFD for segmental circular arch of span 45m and rise 9m
for a UDL of 12 kN/m covering the entire span. (- - - - Deflection profile of given
arch)
