 ABSTRACT

This report highlights my volunteer experience with Gift a Smile Foundation, a Ghaziabad-
based non-governmental organization affiliated with the Indian Chamber of Non-
Government Organisation, dedicated to providing education and support to children from
underprivileged backgrounds. From Aug 2nd to Sept 15th, 2025, I volunteered at the Smile
Pathshala and Slum Area in Bakharva Village, Modinagar Tehsil, Ghaziabad District, Uttar
Pradesh. My primary role involved teaching and mentoring children, assisting in classroom
activities, and developing engaging learning materials to enhance literacy and numeracy
skills.

Through this short yet impactful engagement, I gained firsthand experience in

understanding the educational challenges faced by children in rural and slum communities.
I learned to adapt my teaching methods to diverse learning levels, foster curiosity through
creative lessons, and communicate effectively in resource-constrained settings. These
experiences not only deepened my empathy and leadership but also strengthened my
ability to work collaboratively in community-based environments.

Despite challenges such as limited resources and irregular attendance, the experience was
deeply rewarding—witnessing students’ enthusiasm and growth reaffirmed my belief in the
power of education as a catalyst for change. Quantitatively, my sessions benefited around
40–50 children, contributing to improved classroom participation and foundational
learning outcomes.

Overall, volunteering with Gift a Smile Foundation was a transformative experience that
emphasized the value of compassion, service, and inclusive education. It has inspired me
to continue contributing toward social upliftment and to explore innovative ways—
potentially through technology and digital learning tools—to make quality education
accessible to all.
Chapter 1: Introduction of NGO Community

1. NGO History
Gift A Smile Foundation is a registered non-governmental organization (NGO)
based in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, under the Indian Chamber of Non-
Government Organisation (ICNGO). Founded with the mission to bring smiles to
underprivileged children through education and empowerment, the foundation
focuses on improving the lives of children from marginalized communities by
providing access to quality learning and social welfare programs.

The NGO operates several initiatives, including Smile Pathshala, a community-

based education center that focuses on providing literacy and value-based
education to children living in slum and rural areas. Over the years, Gift A Smile
Foundation has expanded its efforts through partnerships with local
communities, volunteers, and schools to enhance educational equity and social
awareness.

2. Mission and Vision

Mission:

To educate, empower, and uplift underprivileged children by providing them with

opportunities for holistic development through academic learning, moral
education, and emotional support.

Vision:

To build an inclusive society where every child, regardless of socio-economic

background, can smile with dignity and pursue their dreams through access to
quality education and care.

3. Why I Chose This NGO

I chose Gift A Smile Foundation because its values of compassion, education,
and empowerment align closely with my desire to contribute to social welfare. I
was particularly drawn to their emphasis on grassroots education and their direct
engagement with children in rural and slum communities. As a computer science
student, I wanted to apply my skills and empathy toward initiatives that create
tangible social impact, and this NGO offered the perfect environment for that.
I chose Gift - ek smile foundation because its focus on empowering underprivileged youth through innovative career guidance and educational programs
deeply resonates with my values and interests in social impact. As a computer science student passionate about AI/ML and community development, I was
drawn to their hands-on approach in addressing educational inequities in government schools. The NGO's emphasis on practical skills, mentorship, and long-
term change aligned perfectly with my desire to contribute meaningfully while gaining real-world experience in outreach and youth empowerment.

1.4 Objectives of NGO Community

● To provide free and quality education to underprivileged children.

● To create awareness about hygiene, health, and social values.

● To empower communities through skill-building and literacy

drives.

● To support underprivileged families by fostering community

engagement.
CHAPTER 2: OBJECTIVES OF PROJECT
This chapter outlines the goals, purpose, and broader context of my volunteer internship
project at Gift A Smile Foundation, which provided me with an opportunity to contribute
directly to community development while gaining practical exposure to social work and
educational outreach. The project was conducted from September 25 to October 5, 2025, at
Smile Pathshala and the adjoining slum area in Bakharva Village, Modinagar, Ghaziabad
District, under the supervision of the NGO’s coordinators.

The internship aimed to connect theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience in the
domain of social welfare, with a specific focus on child education and community
engagement. Through this short-term yet intensive field exposure, I was able to apply
academic learning to real-world social challenges, strengthening my understanding of
empathy, teamwork, and civic responsibility.

1. AIM TO LEARN

The primary aim of the internship was to gain a comprehensive understanding of nonprofit
operations, grassroots education systems, and the socio-economic barriers faced by
underprivileged children. The project sought to bridge the gap between academic learning
and community service, helping me develop essential personal and professional
competencies.

Specific learning goals included:

● To understand the day-to-day functioning and management of a grassroots NGO.

● To acquire practical experience in organizing and conducting educational sessions

for children from low-income families.

● To develop communication, adaptability, and empathy by working closely with

 children of varied learning capacities.

● To analyze the social factors—such as poverty, lack of resources, and limited

parental support—that affect educational participation.

● To cultivate leadership and organizational skills while working collaboratively in a

team-based environment.

Through this engagement, I also aimed to explore how technology and creative teaching
methods could make learning more inclusive and effective for children in underserved
communities.

2.2 DESCRIPTION

The project involved ten days of structured volunteer work with Gift A Smile Foundation,
during which I participated in a variety of educational and community development
activities. Each day combined hands-on teaching, coordination, and creative resource
preparation.

My primary responsibilities included:

● Assisting in classroom management and lesson delivery at Smile Pathshala.

● Conducting sessions in English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge using

interactive and playful methods.

● Preparing visual aids, charts, and flashcards to support classroom learning.

 ● Organizing extracurricular sessions such as drawing, storytelling, and quiz
competitions to build confidence and curiosity.

● Helping children develop basic moral values, hygiene habits, and communication
skills.

In addition to classroom activities, I also engaged with local community members and
parents to raise awareness about the importance of regular attendance and early childhood
education.

This project not only allowed me to contribute meaningfully but also gave me valuable
exposure to the operational structure of NGOs, including volunteer coordination, resource
allocation, and community outreach strategies.

CHAPTER 3: ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

This chapter describes the detailed work I undertook during my internship at Gift A Smile
Foundation. Each day presented new experiences and learnings, helping me understand the
multifaceted nature of community service and the importance of sustainable education
initiatives.

1. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF TASKS I DID

1. Classroom Teaching and Mentoring:

I conducted daily teaching sessions for children aged 6–14, covering subjects such
as English alphabets, basic grammar, counting, addition and subtraction, and
general awareness. The sessions were structured around fun learning activities,
including storytelling, rhymes, and group reading to enhance engagement.
2. Creative Learning Activities:

To make learning more enjoyable, I introduced art-based teaching methods. We

organized drawing and coloring sessions to encourage self-expression. Students
were also given simple word games and puzzles that developed logical thinking and
teamwork.

3. Moral and Social Education:

Along with academics, I conducted short sessions on personal hygiene, manners,

and environmental awareness. These sessions aimed to instill social responsibility
and healthy habits among the students.

4. Community Interaction:

I actively participated in community visits with NGO members to understand family

backgrounds and encourage parents to support their children’s education. This
experience deepened my understanding of how socio-economic factors shape
educational opportunities.

5. Team Coordination and Event Support:

I collaborated with fellow volunteers and staff members to organize a “Fun Learning
Day” that included games, storytelling, and a mini competition. This event aimed to
motivate students and strengthen their emotional connection to learning.

CHAPTER 4: OBSERVATIONS
This chapter presents the insights and reflections derived from the internship experience at
Gift A Smile Foundation. The opportunity to interact directly with children and local
communities provided me with valuable exposure to the realities of grassroots education
and social work.

1. LEARNING OUTCOME

The most significant learning from this internship was realizing how education can act as a
powerful tool for social change. By teaching children from underprivileged backgrounds, I
observed the difference that consistent mentorship and encouragement can make. I also
developed key interpersonal skills such as patience, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity.

Furthermore, I learned to plan and manage small educational programs efficiently. I gained
an understanding of how NGOs structure their initiatives—from resource planning to
volunteer coordination—to achieve maximum community impact.

2. CHALLENGES FACED

Working in a rural-slum setting came with several challenges:

● Limited Resources: There was a scarcity of teaching aids, stationery, and

technological support.

● Irregular Attendance: Many children missed sessions due to family responsibilities

or seasonal work.

● Language Barriers: Some children were more comfortable in Hindi, requiring

simplified bilingual explanations.

● Attention Span Issues: Maintaining engagement for longer periods was

 challenging, especially for younger children.

Despite these, the experience taught me to improvise, remain positive, and find creative
alternatives to maintain learning continuity.

4.3 SKILLS GAINED

The internship helped me acquire a diverse set of skills:

● Communication: Simplifying ideas for children and coordinating with peers

improved my clarity and confidence.

● Leadership: Managing group activities and motivating students strengthened my

leadership potential.

● Teamwork: Collaborating with NGO staff taught me the value of shared goals and
cooperation.

● Empathy: Understanding the hardships faced by children in low-income settings

nurtured compassion and patience.

● Creativity: Developing low-cost, handmade learning aids boosted my innovation

skills.

4.4 SOCIAL ISSUES OBSERVED

While working at the NGO, I observed several pressing social issues:

● Educational inequality due to poverty and lack of infrastructure.

● Gender disparity, with some girls missing sessions due to household duties.

● Poor hygiene and health awareness in slum communities.

● Limited access to digital learning tools and modern teaching aids.

CHAPTER 5: OUTCOME
This chapter outlines the tangible and intangible outcomes of my internship, highlighting
both societal and personal impacts.

1. IMPACT TO SOCIETY

● Supported 40–50 children in improving their reading, writing, and numerical skills.

● Helped organize a “Fun Learning Day,” promoting confidence and participation

among children.

● Created awareness among families about the value of education and hygiene.
 ● Contributed to building a joyful, inclusive classroom environment that encouraged
learning through play.

5.2 IMPACT TO SELF

● Gained practical understanding of community engagement and social work ethics.

● Strengthened my adaptability, patience, and ability to handle real-world challenges.

● Developed empathy and a sense of fulfillment by contributing to a meaningful

cause.

● Discovered new motivation to integrate my technical skills (AI/ML) into developing

accessible educational tools for NGOs.

5.3 ANY MEASURABLE RESULT

● Conducted 10+ educational sessions impacting approximately 50 children.

● Developed 15+ educational charts and visual learning materials.

 ● Organized 2 classroom events that improved attendance and morale.

● Observed improved classroom participation and communication among students

after regular sessions.

CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION

6.1 IMPORTANCE
This internship at Gift A Smile Foundation was not just a volunteer experience—it was a
journey of empathy, learning, and personal growth. It highlighted the potential of small,
consistent community actions to create meaningful change. The foundation’s focus on
child welfare and education showed me that even short-term initiatives can have a lasting
impact when driven by compassion and teamwork.

The project also enhanced my understanding of how education can bridge social gaps and
empower children to dream beyond their limitations. For me, this experience was a step
toward becoming a more socially responsible and globally aware individual.

6.2 FUTURE SCOPE

Going forward, there is significant potential to build upon this experience through:

● Digital Education: Developing simple e-learning platforms and mobile applications

for NGOs to use in remote areas.

● Skill Development Workshops: Organizing training programs for older children

focusing on digital literacy and basic computer skills.

● Sustainable Collaboration: Partnering with local schools to ensure continuity in

education even after NGO sessions end.

● Data-Driven Impact Measurement: Leveraging my computer science background to

design data dashboards that track student attendance and learning progress.

● Volunteer Expansion: Encouraging more college students to participate in

community projects to amplify reach and awareness.
 By combining technology with compassion, I hope to continue supporting
organizations like Gift A Smile Foundation in their mission to create a brighter, more
equitable future for children.
