Consumer Rights
20 jan 2026
Introduction
Consumers are an integral part of any economy as they create
demand for goods and services. A consumer is a person who
purchases goods or services for personal use and not for resale or
commercial purposes. In the modern marketplace, consumers are
exposed to various unfair trade practices such as misleading
advertisements, defective products, adulteration, overcharging,
and poor-quality services. Due to lack of awareness and
information, many consumers become victims of exploitation. To
safeguard consumers from such practices, consumer rights have
been established. These rights provide legal protection and promote
fairness, honesty, and transparency in the market. Consumer rights
empower individuals to make informed decisions and ensure that
their interests are protected against unethical business behavior.
Learning Objectives
The main objective of this project is to develop a clear
understanding of the concept of consumer rights and their
importance in daily life. This project aims to help students
understand who a consumer is and why consumer protection is
necessary in a competitive market. It also focuses on educating
consumers about their legal rights and responsibilities while
purchasing goods and services. Another important objective is to
spread awareness about the role of the government and consumer
courts in resolving consumer disputes. Through this project,
students will gain knowledge that will help them become informed,
responsible, and confident consumers in the future.

Content Analysis
A consumer is any individual who buys goods or avails
services for personal use. Consumers are the backbone
of economic activities, but they are often vulnerable to
exploitation due to lack of knowledge and bargaining
power. To protect consumers, various rights have been
recognized under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. One
of the most important rights is the right to safety, which
ensures that consumers are protected against goods and
services that are hazardous to life and property. This
right is especially important in the case of food items,
medicines, electrical appliances, and vehicles, where
defective products can cause serious harm.
Conclusion
Consumer rights are essential for maintaining balance and
fairness in the marketplace. They protect consumers from
exploitation and ensure that businesses follow ethical
practices. Awareness of consumer rights enables individuals
to make informed decisions and take appropriate action when
their rights are violated. An educated and vigilant consumer
not only protects their own interests but also contributes to the
development of a fair and transparent economy. Therefore, it is
important to promote consumer awareness and education at
all levels of society so that every consumer can enjoy their
rights confidently and responsibly.
