1. INTRODUCTION

Automation in supply chain management (SCM) is transforming how goods are produced, stored,
and delivered. From robotic process automation (RPA) to autonomous transport, innovations in
automation allow businesses to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve service delivery.
This study unit explores the various facets of automation and their role in modernising supply
chain operations.

2. FUNDAMENTALS OF AUTOMATION IN SCM

Automation is becoming essential in SCM as businesses seek to improve speed, accuracy, and
efficiency. Automation technologies, such as RPA, smart warehousing systems, and autonomous
transport, enable supply chains to operate with less human intervention while improving reliability
and performance (Bag, Wood, & Xu, 2020). By automating repetitive tasks, companies can focus
on more strategic functions and reduce errors caused by manual processes.

3. RPA IN SCM: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) involves the use of software robots to perform repetitive, rule-
based tasks, such as processing orders, invoicing, and updating inventory records (Ivanov &
Dolgui, 2020). RPA offers significant benefits in SCM, including cost savings, increased efficiency,
and reduced human error. However, there are challenges to implementing RPA, such as the initial

3
investment costs and the need for ongoing maintenance. Additionally, RPA systems must be
integrated with existing supply chain systems to avoid disruptions.

4. INNOVATION IN MANUFACTURING: 3D PRINTING AND PROTOTYPING

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is revolutionising production processes by

allowing businesses to create complex parts and products on demand. In SCM, 3D printing
reduces lead times, minimises inventory costs, and enables rapid prototyping (Choi, Rogers, &
Vakil, 2020). This technology is particularly useful in industries with highly customised products or
where rapid response to market changes is critical. As 3D printing becomes more accessible and
cost-effective, its adoption is expected to increase across various sectors.

5. EFFICIENCY UNLEASHED: SMART WAREHOUSING SOLUTIONS

Smart warehousing solutions leverage automation, robotics, and IoT to streamline warehouse
operations. Automated systems, such as conveyors, robotic pickers, and drones, improve the
speed and accuracy of order fulfilment while reducing labour costs (Zhu, Liu, & Lai, 2018). In
addition, IoT-enabled devices provide real-time tracking of inventory and assets, enabling supply
chain managers to monitor stock levels and predict replenishment needs. These solutions lead to
significant improvements in warehouse efficiency and overall supply chain performance.

6. AUTONOMOUS TRANSPORT: DRONES AND SELF-DRIVING VEHICLES

Autonomous transport technologies, including drones and self-driving vehicles, are becoming
more prevalent in SCM. Drones are being used for last-mile delivery in remote areas, while
autonomous trucks and delivery vans are expected to revolutionise long-haul logistics (Ivanov,
2021). These technologies reduce the need for human drivers, cut fuel costs, and optimise delivery
routes. However, regulatory and safety concerns remain significant barriers to widespread
adoption, and businesses must navigate these challenges carefully.

7. THE GREEN FLEET: TRANSITIONING TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in SCM offers environmental and cost-saving benefits.
EVs produce zero emissions, making them a sustainable alternative to traditional vehicles (Ivanov
& Dolgui, 2020). Companies like Amazon and DHL have begun incorporating EVs into their
delivery fleets to reduce their carbon footprints and meet sustainability goals. While the initial
investment in EVs can be high, long-term savings from reduced fuel and maintenance costs can
offset these expenses.

4
8. THE FINAL STEP: INNOVATIONS IN LAST-MILE DELIVERY

Last-mile delivery is often the most expensive and time-consuming part of the supply chain.
Innovations such as autonomous vehicles, drones, and locker systems are helping businesses
address these challenges by improving the speed and convenience of delivery (Bag et al., 2020).
These technologies also enhance customer satisfaction by providing real-time tracking and
flexible delivery options. As last-mile delivery becomes more efficient, companies can reduce costs
while maintaining high service levels.

9. CONCLUSION

In conclusion, automation is driving significant improvements across the supply chain, from
manufacturing and warehousing to transportation and delivery. By adopting technologies such as
RPA, 3D printing, smart warehousing, and autonomous transport, businesses can increase
efficiency, reduce costs, and improve customer satisfaction. Understanding these innovations and
their applications is essential for any organisation looking to stay competitive in the modern supply
chain landscape.
