Introduction
Consumer rights are the rights given to every buyer of goods and services to
protect them from exploitation and unfair practices in the market. These rights
ensure that consumers are treated fairly and receive proper information about what
they buy. Consumer protection laws are made to maintain honesty and fairness
between sellers and buyers, promoting a healthy and safe marketplace.

The six consumer rights are:
1. Right to Safety
2. Right to Information
3. Right to Choose
4. Right to be Heard
5. Right to Seek Redressal
6. Right to Consumer Education
Information about the Rights (1 & 2)
1. Right to Safety:
The Right to Safety protects consumers from products and services that are
dangerous to health or life. It applies especially to items such as electrical
appliances, medicines, food products, and vehicles. Before buying, consumers
should look for standard quality marks like ISI, Agmark, or FSSAI.
2. Right to Information:
Consumers have the right to get full and correct details about the products they
buy. This includes information like price, weight, date of manufacture, expiry date,
ingredients, directions for use, and side effects (if any). It helps consumers
compare products and avoid deception through false advertisements.

3. Right to Choose:
This right ensures that consumers have the freedom to select from a variety of
products and services at fair prices. Monopoly or restrictive trade practices should
not limit consumers’ choices.
4. Right to be Heard:
Consumers have the right to express their opinions and complaints regarding
products or services. Their grievances must be acknowledged and acted upon by
companies or authorities.

5. Right to Seek Redressal:
This right gives consumers the authority to seek justice against unfair trade
practices or defective products. If a product causes harm or a service is
unsatisfactory, the consumer can demand compensation, replacement, or refund.
6. Right to Consumer Education:
This right emphasizes the need for awareness among consumers about their rights
and responsibilities. A well-informed consumer can question sellers, demand
quality, and refuse unfair offers.
Consumer Movement
The consumer movement is a social movement that began as a reaction to unfair
trade practices, adulteration, black marketing, and false advertising. It aims to
protect consumer interests through organized efforts and public awareness.
In India, the movement started gaining attention in the 1960s, but it became strong
after the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 was passed. This act provided a legal
framework for consumer rights and established consumer courts at district, state,
and national levels.
How to be Safe Consumers
Being a safe consumer means being alert, informed, and responsible while buying
goods and services. Here are some important ways to be a safe consumer:
1. Check Labels and Expiry Dates.
2. Ask for Bills and Receipts.
3. Look for Standard Marks.
4. Beware of False Advertisements.
5. Compare Prices and Quality.
6. Buy from Authorized Dealers.
7. Know Your Rights and Remedies.
8. File Complaints When Needed.
