Tutorial Sheet

1. Give power sets of the sets:

(a) {a, b} (b) {1, 2, 4}

2. Show that n[P [P [P [ϕ]]]] = 4.

3. Given A = {x : xSis an integer and 1S≤ x ≤ 5}, B = {3, 4, 5, 17} and C = {1, 2, 3, ...} , find
A ∩ B, A ∩ C, A B, A − B, (A ∩ B) (A ∩ C).

4. If A and B be two sets containing 3Sand 6 elements respectively, what can be maximum and
minimum number of elements in A B ?

5. Interpret the following:

(a) Q Qc
S S
(b) Q∩Z (c) (−1, 3) (0, 4) (d) (−1, 3)∩(0, 4)

6. Prove the following analytically for sets A, B and C . Also verify them graphically.
S
(a) A − C ∩ C − B = ϕ (b) A − (B ∩ C) = (A − B) (A − C).

7. Find the sets A and B, if (A − B) = {1, 3, 7, 11}, B − A = {2, 6, 8} and A ∩ B = {4, 9}.

S
8. For any two set A and B, A ∩ (A B)?

9. 100 students were asked whether they had taken courses in any of the three areas, Maths,
English and Biology. The results were: 45 had taken Maths;18 had taken Maths & English;
38 had taken English; 9 had taken Maths & Biology; 21 had taken Biology; 4 had taken
Biology and English, and 23 had taken no courses in any of the areas.
(a) Draw a Venn diagram that will show the results of the survey.
(b) Determine the number of students who had taken classes in exactly (i) one of the areas,
(ii) two of the areas.

10. Two finite sets have m and n elements respectively. The total number of subsets of first set
is 56 more than the total number of subsets of the second set. Find values of m and n ?
11. In a group of 50 students, the number of students studying French, English, Sanskrit were
found to be as follows: French = 17, English = 13, Sanskrit = 15, French and English = 09,
English and Sanskrit = 4, French and Sanskrit = 5, English, French and Sanskrit = 3. Find
the number of students who study
(a) French only, (b) English only , (c) Sanskrit only ,
(d) English and Sanskrit but not French Sanskrit only , (e) none of the three languages.

S
12. Prove that n(A B) = n(A) + n(B)–n(A ∩ B).
