FAM Case Packer – Error Troubleshooting Guide

**Error Code:** 05_T. OUT HEAD OR ENCODER

**Root Cause:** The machine cannot detect motion or position from the output head or its
encoder.

Step 1: Ensure Machine is in Safe State

- STOP the machine.

- Switch off power if needed for electrical checks.

- Ensure all safety interlocks are in place before working inside.

Step 2: Mechanical Check – Transfer Out Head

Checkpoint Action

Physical blockage Check if any bottle, carton, or object is

blocking the transfer head.

Manual movement Try to move the transfer head manually (if

safe) to ensure it's not stuck.

Pneumatic or mechanical failure If pneumatic, confirm the air pressure and

cylinders are working properly.

Step 3: Encoder Inspection

Checkpoint Action

Encoder cable Trace the cable from encoder to control

panel. Reseat all connectors.

Visual damage Check for cracks, loose shaft coupling,

oil/dust on the encoder.

Alignment Ensure encoder is properly aligned with

the motor shaft or mechanism.

Step 4: Signal Verification

If available:

- Go to diagnostic screen on HMI and check for encoder signal status.

- Use a multimeter or oscilloscope to check for pulsed voltage output when rotating the
shaft.
- Typical encoder output: 5V square pulses or 24V depending on type.

Step 5: Motor & Drive Check

Checkpoint Action

Servo/Stepper motor Ensure the motor connected to the out

head is not jammed.

Drive alarms Check for drive faults on control panel or

drive itself. Reset if needed.

Step 6: Reset and Test

After fixing the issue:

1. Turn the machine OFF and ON.

2. Clear the alarm from the HMI (ESC or Reset).

3. Run a test cycle without product.

4. Monitor for any new warnings or recurrences.

Optional: Report Log Sheet

Time Error Appeared Action Taken Result Next Step

Contact Support If:

- Encoder shows no signal but wiring and drive are okay.

- Error recurs even after replacing encoder or fixing mechanical issues.

- PLC I/O or encoder read module may be faulty (requires OEM check).
