Reflections on the Week’s Activities

This week, I focused on understanding Bézier splines and their implementation in computer

graphics and engineering applications. The readings and research provided a comprehensive

overview of how Bézier splines are used to create smooth curves and surfaces, which are

fundamental in both 2D and 3D modeling. I was particularly surprised by the mathematical

elegance of Bézier splines, especially how control points influence the shape of the curve

through Bernstein polynomials and de Casteljau’s algorithm (Massachusetts Institute of

Technology, 2020).

One challenge I faced was grasping the detailed mathematical formulation behind Bézier curves,

including the blending functions and how they ensure smoothness and continuity. To overcome

this, I revisited the lecture notes and consulted additional online resources that explained the

concepts with visual aids and interactive demos, which greatly enhanced my understanding

([Link], 2025).

Overall, this unit deepened my appreciation for the intersection of mathematics and computer

graphics, highlighting how theoretical concepts translate into practical tools used in various

software applications.

Application of Bézier Splines in Engineering and Cartography Software

Bézier splines have significant applications in engineering and cartography software, where

precision and smooth curve generation are critical. In engineering, software like AutoCAD uses

Bézier splines to design complex mechanical parts and architectural elements, allowing

engineers to create smooth, accurate curves that are essential for manufacturing and construction

(Adobe, n.d.; Blender Foundation, n.d.).

In cartography, Bézier splines are used to model and render smooth geographical features such

as coastlines, rivers, and roads. The ability to manipulate control points enables cartographers to

represent natural and man-made features with high fidelity, improving the visual quality and

accuracy of maps (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2020).

The mathematical properties of Bézier splines, including their smoothness and local control,

make them ideal for these applications. Their implementation in software tools enhances both the

design process and the final output, demonstrating the practical importance of this mathematical

concept in real-world engineering and mapping tasks.
