CHAPTER I. Evaluation of Technology for Vocabulary Enhancement
1.1 Research studies on the effectiveness of technology in vocabulary
acquisition.
Vocabulary enhancement is a crucial component of language learning and
overall cognitive development. With the advent of technology, there are now myriad
tools and applications designed to assist individuals in expanding their vocabulary.
This evaluation focuses on various technologies including mobile apps, online
platforms, and digital tools that facilitate vocabulary acquisition, and assesses their
effectiveness based on usability, engagement, adaptability, and educational impact.
Digital technology is pivotal for language learning in this modern era. For facilitating
the learning process, students can employ digital technology ; the technology provides
different affordability, such as interpersonal connection and interaction in social
media. Learners’ reaction to using new technology is positive, and they consider
technology as a suitably combined and well-designed avenue for learning. Recently,
learning by mobiles or mobile learning has become a new tendency to help learners
deal with materials whenever the necessity arises . The advent of new technologies
has given effective means for language learning so that learners can enhance their
knowledge of different sub-skills and skills . Moreover, tertiary level learners have
significant readiness of using mobiles inside and outside the language classroom . In
this regard, one of the topics that have gotten a lot of interest is vocabulary acquisition
via mobile technology. There are a variety of mobile applications that can help pupils
expand their vocabulary. According to the recent studies, MALL appears to be
important at multiple stages of language instruction. Mobile technologies include a
wide range of “handheld technology, such as smartphones, tablets, or gaming devices
in a language learning context” and are not restricted to smartphones . In this
context, Nazari and Xodabande suggested that mobile technologies’ personalized,
portable, and dynamic qualities have opened up new avenues for theory and research

5
development. They also came to the conclusion that if teachers opted to use mobile
phones, both they and their students would profit. Similarly, movements like "Bring
Your Own Device" stress interacting with and utilizing the capabilities of mobile
technology in order to raise educational standards. The importance of new
technologies in language learning/teaching, for example vocabulary, is a viable
choice, and a variety of multimedia software can be utilized correspondingly. Mobile
technologies have a good impact on vocabulary learning in particular. For
instance, Lu utilized SMS for vocabulary acquisition among L2 learners in the third
high school level. In the post-test, participants who used this service expressed a
favourable impression regarding MALL or mobile learning. The study of Lin
used computer assisted language learning programme based on video and its effects
on incidental vocabulary acquisition of English learners who had varying degrees of
English proficiency in both listening and reading skills. The findings revealed that
video-based computer-assisted learning was an effective tool for individuals with high
reading and listening skills. Suwantara and Orawiwatnakul evaluated the use of SMS
to teach new terms to the experimental group outside of the classroom for 6 weeks.
The researchers, on the other hand, gave the control group new words to learn in their
classroom. The results showed that the experimental group had performed better than
the control group [4,160].
The participants of this research work were 64 learners from two sections , and
they possessed an intermediate stage of English proficiency. The researchers
conducted random sampling, taking 10 sections/classes into consideration; one of the
sections received Whats app related vocabulary learning. The other section received
traditional teaching lessons. For both of the sections, the same instructor taught the
course. The experimental group consisted of 34 students who were 18 male and
16 female students. The control group comprised 30 students; out of them, 20 were
male learners, and 10 were female learners. The first language of the students was
Bengali. They had no prior experience staying in a place where English was the native

6
language. They all studied English as a foreign language in elementary and senior
school. The students’ ages ranged from 16 to 22. The pre-test was carried out to
classify the students on the basis of their knowledge and vocabulary performance. In
addition, both the experimental and control groups received a vocabulary pre-test to
establish homogeneity. An information sheet describing the study, a consent form,
and a personal information sheet for the participants were among the items utilized in
the research [13,223].
1.2. Challenges and limitations of using technology for vocabulary
enhancement.
Benefits of Using Technology for Vocabulary Enhancement Accessibility:
Technology provides easy access to a vast array of resources, including dictionaries,
thesauruses, and vocabulary-building apps. Users can access these resources anytime,
anywhere, using smartphones, tablets, or computers. Engagement: Many vocabulary
enhancement tools leverage gamification techniques to make learning enjoyable and
engaging. Features such as quizzes, challenges, and rewards motivate users to actively
participate in the learning process.
Personalization: Technology allows for personalized learning experiences
tailored to individual needs and preferences. Adaptive algorithms can analyze users'
strengths and weaknesses to provide targeted recommendations for improving
vocabulary.
Multimedia Support: Technology enables the integration of multimedia
elements such as audio pronunciations, images, and example sentences, which
enhance understanding and retention of new words.
Interactive Learning: Various interactive exercises and activities, such as
word games, flashcards, and interactive quizzes, make vocabulary learning more
interactive and dynamic. Progress Tracking: Many vocabulary apps and platforms
offer progress tracking features that allow users to monitor their learning journey, set
goals, and track their improvement over time.

7
Dependence on Technology: Excessive reliance on technology for vocabulary
enhancement may lead to a lack of autonomy and critical thinking skills. Users may
become dependent on technology to provide answers rather than developing their own
problem-solving abilities.
Quality of Content: Not all vocabulary resources available online are of high
quality. Some apps and websites may contain inaccurate definitions, poor examples,
or outdated information, which can hinder effective learning.
Overwhelm: The abundance of vocabulary-building tools and resources
available online can be overwhelming for users, making it difficult to choose the most
suitable ones for their needs. This can lead to decision paralysis and decreased
motivation to engage with the material.
Distraction: Technology, especially smartphones and computers, can be a
source of distraction during vocabulary learning sessions. Notifications, social media,
and other apps may divert users' attention away from their learning goals, reducing
overall effectiveness.
Lack of Contextualization: While technology can provide access to a wide
range of vocabulary words, it may not always provide sufficient context for
understanding how and when to use them appropriately in different contexts. This
lack of contextualization can limit the practical application of newly acquired
vocabulary. Limited Social Interaction: Vocabulary enhancement through technology
often occurs in isolation, without opportunities for meaningful social interaction or
discussion. Language learning is inherently social, and the absence of real-time
interaction with peers and instructors may impede language acquisition.
Cost and Accessibility: While many vocabulary apps and online resources are
free or low-cost, some high-quality tools may require a subscription or purchase fee.
Additionally, not all users have equal access to technology due to factors such as
socioeconomic status, geographic location, or digital literacy. Retention and Transfer:
Simply exposing oneself to new words through technology does not guarantee long-

8
term retention or the ability to transfer that knowledge to real-world communication.
Effective vocabulary acquisition requires repeated exposure, meaningful practice, and
application in various contexts [9,51].
Using technology to enhance vocabulary presents both opportunities and
challenges. While digital tools and resources offer unprecedented access to language
learning materials, their effective use requires overcoming several obstacles. One of
the primary challenges is the overwhelming abundance of resources. From apps and
websites to online dictionaries and flashcard systems, the sheer volume of available
tools can be paralyzing for learners. This abundance can lead to decision fatigue,
where the effort required to choose the right resource diminishes the motivation to
study. Furthermore, not all resources are of equal quality; some may offer outdated or
incorrect information, leading to inefficient or erroneous learning. Another significant
challenge is the lack of personalization in many technological tools. While some
advanced platforms use algorithms to tailor content to individual learning needs,
many others provide a one-size-fits-all approach. This can result in a mismatch
between the learner's current proficiency level and the difficulty of the material
presented, leading to frustration and disengagement. Personalized learning paths are
crucial for maintaining motivation and ensuring that learners are neither bored with
too-easy content nor overwhelmed by too-difficult material. Additionally, technology
can create a false sense of progress. Many vocabulary apps use gamification
techniques, such as points, badges, and streaks, to encourage regular use. While these
features can boost engagement, they can also lead to a superficial understanding of
vocabulary. Learners might focus more on earning rewards than on deeply
understanding and retaining new words. The instant feedback provided by these apps
can create an illusion of mastery, whereas long-term retention and the ability to use
words in context require more sustained and varied practice. The distraction factor is
another significant issue [10,80].

9
Mobile devices and computers, the primary platforms for digital learning tools,
are also sources of endless distractions. Notifications from social media, emails, and
other apps can interrupt study sessions, reducing the effectiveness of learning. This
constant potential for distraction requires learners to have strong self-discipline and
time management skills, which can be particularly challenging for younger users.
Furthermore, the digital divide poses a barrier to the equitable use of technology for
vocabulary enhancement. Not all learners have equal access to high-quality devices,
reliable internet connections, or the latest software. This disparity can exacerbate
existing educational inequalities, leaving some students behind. For technology to be
a truly effective tool for vocabulary enhancement, it must be accessible to all learners,
regardless of their socioeconomic status. Privacy and data security concerns also
present challenges. Many educational apps and platforms require users to create
accounts and input personal information, which can be vulnerable to data breaches.
Ensuring that learners' data is protected is crucial for maintaining trust in these digital
tools. Moreover, the lack of human interaction in technology-based learning can be a
drawback. Vocabulary learning is often most effective when it involves social
interaction, such as conversations and discussions, where words are used in context.
Technology, while offering simulated interactions and language practice, cannot fully
replicate the nuances and spontaneity of real-life communication.
Conclusion on chapter I
In conclusion, while technology offers numerous innovative tools for
vocabulary enhancement, its challenges and limitations must be acknowledged. These
challenges include the potential for digital distraction, varying access to technology,
and the need for substantial initial and ongoing investments. Additionally, there is a
necessity for educators to be adequately trained to integrate these tools effectively
into their teaching practices. Research studies on the effectiveness of technology in
vocabulary acquisition present a mixed but generally positive picture. Many studies
indicate that technology can significantly aid vocabulary learning through interactive

10
apps, multimedia resources, and adaptive learning systems. These tools often provide
engaging and personalized learning experiences, which can be more effective than
traditional methods alone. However, the effectiveness largely depends on the quality
of the technology, its implementation, and the learners' individual differences.
Moreover, research indicates that the context in which vocabulary is learned is
critical. Technologies that embed vocabulary learning in meaningful and engaging
contexts, such as interactive stories, simulations, or project-based activities, tend to be
more effective. Conversely, isolated drill-and-practice applications, while useful for
memorization, may not significantly contribute to the ability to use new vocabulary in
real-life situations, while technology holds great promise for enhancing vocabulary
acquisition, its challenges and limitations cannot be overlooked. Ensuring equitable
access, high-quality content, effective integration into broader educational strategies,
and addressing privacy concerns are essential steps for maximizing the benefits of
technological tools. Research supports the potential of these tools, especially when
used to complement traditional methods and provide personalized, context-rich
learning experiences. Moving forward, continuous evaluation and adaptation of
educational technologies will be crucial in overcoming these challenges and fully
realizing their potential in vocabulary enhancement. Overall, while technology has the
potential to enhance vocabulary acquisition, its success hinges on thoughtful
integration, addressing accessibility issues, and continuous evaluation and
improvement of the tools and methodologies used. Future research should focus on
long-term studies to better understand the impacts and refine the approaches for
optimal educational outcomes.
