2. Differentiate marketing from advertising.
3. Identify the objectives, roles, and importance of advertising in business.
4. Explain the advertising process and major types of advertising.

Introduction
Advertising is a powerful force that influences how people think, feel, and act as consumers.
Every day, individuals are exposed to thousands of advertisements—from television
commercials and billboards to social media posts and mobile app promotions. In both developed
markets like the United States and emerging markets like the Philippines, advertising plays a
crucial role in shaping brand preferences, supporting business growth, and driving economic
activity.

This module introduces the fundamental concepts of advertising, its objectives, and its role
within the broader marketing framework. By understanding these foundations, students will be
better equipped to analyze real-world advertisements and create effective advertising strategies in
the future.

1. Definition of Advertising
Advertising is a paid, non-personal form of communication delivered through various media by
an identified sponsor to inform, persuade, remind, or reinforce messages about products,
services, or ideas to a target audience.

Key Elements of Advertising:

● Paid communication – The advertiser pays for space or time (TV, radio, online ads,
billboards).
● Non-personal – Messages are delivered to large audiences, not one-on-one.
● Identified sponsor – The advertiser is clearly stated (e.g., Nike, Jollibee, Coca-Cola).
● Mass media channels – TV, radio, print, digital platforms, outdoor media.

Example (American Setting):

Nike’s television and YouTube advertisements featuring professional athletes are paid messages
designed to inspire consumers and promote Nike products globally.

Example (Philippine Setting):

Jollibee’s heartwarming TV commercials are paid advertisements that promote not just food but
also family values, appealing strongly to Filipino culture.

2. Marketing vs. Advertising

Although the terms marketing and advertising are often used interchangeably, they represent
different concepts in business. Understanding their distinction is essential for future marketers
and advertisers.

Marketing

Marketing is a broad, strategic, and continuous process that focuses on identifying customer
needs, creating value, delivering that value, and maintaining long-term relationships with
customers. Marketing begins before a product is created and continues even after the sale.

Marketing includes the 4 Ps of Marketing, also known as the Marketing Mix:

1. Product

This refers to what a company offers to satisfy customer needs and wants. It includes product
design, features, quality, branding, packaging, and after-sales service.

American Example: Apple carefully designs the iPhone with premium features, sleek design,
and a strong brand image.

Philippine Example: Jollibee adapts its menu (Chickenjoy, Jolly Spaghetti) to Filipino taste
preferences.

2. Price
Price refers to how much customers pay for a product or service. Pricing decisions consider
costs, competition, target market, and perceived value.

American Example: Netflix offers tiered subscription pricing based on video quality and
number of screens.

Philippine Example: Mang Inasal uses affordable pricing and unli-rice promos to attract
mass-market consumers.

3. Place (Distribution)

Place refers to how products are made available to customers, including store locations, online
platforms, logistics, and distribution channels.

American Example: Amazon uses online platforms and fast delivery systems to reach
customers nationwide.

Philippine Example: SM Supermalls and sari-sari stores distribute products across urban and
rural areas.

4. Promotion

Promotion includes all communication strategies used to inform, persuade, and remind
customers about products. Advertising is part of promotion, along with sales promotion, public
relations, and personal selling.

American Example: Coca-Cola uses TV commercials, social media campaigns, and event
sponsorships.

Philippine Example: Shopee uses TV ads, influencer marketing, and online promotions like
11.11 sales.

Advertising

Advertising is a specific tool under promotion. It focuses on paid, non-personal

communication designed to deliver messages to large audiences through mass media.

Key Difference Summary:

● Marketing = The overall business strategy (big picture)

● Advertising = One communication activity within marketing

3. Objectives of Advertising
Advertising objectives guide what an advertisement is meant to achieve. These objectives vary
depending on the product’s life cycle and market conditions.

a. Informative Advertising

Used to introduce new products, services, or features.

Example (US): Tesla advertisements explaining electric vehicle technology and sustainability.

Example (PH): GCash ads explaining how to use digital wallets for cashless transactions.

b. Persuasive Advertising

Example (US): Pepsi ads persuading consumers to choose Pepsi over Coca-Cola.

Example (PH): Smart vs. Globe telecom ads highlighting faster internet speed or better
coverage.

Example (US): McDonald’s simple logo-based ads reminding customers of familiar products.

Example (PH): San Miguel Beer advertisements during fiestas and holidays.

d. Reinforcement Advertising

Reassures customers that they made the right choice.

Example (US): Amazon’s follow-up ads emphasizing customer satisfaction and reviews.

**Example (PH): Toyota Philippines ads emphasizing reliability and long-term value.

4. Advertising Process
Advertising follows a systematic process to ensure effectiveness.

Step 1: Identifying the Target Market

Advertisers define who they want to reach based on age, gender, income, lifestyle, and behavior.
Example: Teenagers for fast food brands; professionals for banking services.

Step 2: Setting Advertising Objectives

Clear, measurable goals such as increasing brand awareness or boosting sales.

Step 3: Creating the Advertising Message

Developing creative content that appeals emotionally or rationally.

Step 4: Selecting Media

Choosing the right channels (TV, radio, social media, billboards).

Example: TikTok and Instagram for Gen Z; TV and radio for mass audiences.

Step 5: Budgeting and Evaluation

Determining how much to spend and measuring results through sales, reach, and engagement.

5. Segments / Types of Advertising

a. Product Advertising

Promotes specific goods or services.

Example: Coca-Cola soft drinks; Selecta ice cream.

b. Institutional Advertising

Builds corporate image rather than selling products.

Example: Google’s ads about innovation; Ayala Group’s sustainability campaigns.

c. Retail Advertising

Promotes stores and sales promotions.

Example: Walmart sales ads; SM Supermarket weekly promos.

d. Social Advertising
Promotes social causes and public awareness.

Example: Anti-smoking campaigns (US); DOH health campaigns (PH).

e. Digital Advertising
