Week 9 Assignment

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is an air pollutant primarily produced from burning fossil fuels in vehicles and power plants, leading to harmful effects like respiratory issues and environmental damage. It contributes to the formation of smog, ozone, and acid rain, which can spread far from its source. To mitigate its impact, we can transition to clean energy, promote electric and public transportation, and enforce stricter emission regulations on industries and vehicles.

Pick an air pollutant. Where does it come from? Where does it go? Why is it harmful?
How do we reduce the impacts of it?

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a harmful air pollutant that comes from burning fossil fuels in
cars, power plants, and factories. Once it’s released into the air, a chemical reaction is
produced, forming smog, ozone, and acid rain, which travels a far range from where it
originated. Nitrogen can harm the respiratory system by irritating the lungs, worsening
asthma, and reducing lung function. It can also damage plants, soils, and water
systems. To reduce its impact, we can switch to clean energy resources like solar
panels or windmills. We can also drive electric, use public transportation, or even get
some exercise in by walking or cycling to places that aren’t too far. Furthermore, we can
enforce emission controls on industries and vehicles, and strengthen air quality
regulations to protect both people and the environment. To enforce emission control we
can put laws in place that allow for the monitoring of emissions from big industries, and
industries and vehicles that create too much emission will be subject to fine or
repercussions.
