Biostatistics Assignment Maximum mark 20%
1. Explain the application of biostatistics in your profession
2. What are the different types of bar diagrams? Discuss their relative merits and demerits.
3. If class mid-points in a frequency distribution of a group of persons are 25, 32, 39, 46,
53, 60, 67, 74 and 81, find (a) size of the class interval, and (b) the class boundaries.
4. The number of calories per serving for selecting ready to eat cereals is listed here.
62 50 57 58 51 53 62 64 60 61 60 51 64 55 55 52 60
65 58 60 59 52 63 56 56 58 64 63 62 60 58 54 62 54
54 60 65 60 62 63 52 53 62 53 61 61 59 65 59 56
a. Construct a grouped frequency distribution for the data.
b. Draw a histogram and frequency polygon
c. Construct less than and more than cumulative frequency curve(ogive)
5. A box contains 4 red pens and 5 black pens. Find the probability of drawing 3 black.
An urn contains 5 red and 7 green balls. Another urn contains 6 red and 9 green balls. If
a ball is drawn from any one of the two urns, find the probability that the ball drawn is
green.
6. Five percent of the people have high blood pressure. Of the people with high blood
pressure, 75 percent drink alcohol; whereas, only 50 percent of the people without high
blood pressure drink alcohol. What percent of the drinker have high blood pressure?
7. A diagnostic test for a certain disease is 95 percent accurate, in that if a person has the
disease, it will detect it with a probability of 0.95, and if a person does not have the
disease, it will give a negative result with a probability of 0.95. Suppose that only 0.5
percent of the population has the disease in question. A person is chosen at random
from this population. The test indicates that this person has the disease. What is the
(conditional) probability that he or she does have the disease?
8. The random variable X has a normal distribution with mean 2 and standard deviation
3. Find the value of the variable X such that the probability of the interval from mean to
that value is 0.4115.
9. A food scientist is doing research in to food poisoning. She believe that 25% of eggs
sold in a market are contaminated with salmonella and she tests this claim by buying a
sample of 20 eggs from the market. Under what conditions can the binomial
distribution be used to model the number of eggs in the sample that are contaminated
with salmonella? Assuming these condition hold, find the probability that:
i. No egg in the sample are contaminated
ii. Exactly one egg is contaminated salmonella?
iii. Two or more eggs are contaminated with salmonella?
10. Patients arrive at a certain hospital at an average rate of two every 10 minutes. The
number of arrivals is distributed according to a Poisson distribution. What is the
probability that there will be :
a. No arrivals during any period of ten minutes?
b. Exactly one arrival during this time period?
c. More than two arrivals during this time period?
11. Prevalence of aggressive behavior and associated factors among patients with
schizophrenia attending at Amanuel Mental specialized hospital, Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, 2015. Based on this title identify the study population, target population and
sampling unit.
12. Suppose a historical data show that the mean prone resting systolic blood
pressure (BP) for male army aged 18-24 is 126. A sample of 87 recent male army
recruits in this age group shows a mean prone resting systolic blood pressure of
128.46 with a standard deviation of 7. At α = 0.05, does the recruits’ mean BP exceed
the historical average of 126?
13. An advertisement claims that more than 60% of doctors prefer a particular brand of
pain killer. An agency established to monitor truth in advertising conducts a survey
consisting of a random sample of 120 doctors. Of the 120 questioned, 82 indicated a
preference for the particular brand. Are these sample results consistent with the claim
of the advertisement? Use α=0.05.
