DIRECT & INDIRECT OBJECT

Direct object: Is the person, thing or entity that directly receives the action of the verb in a
sentence. It answers questions WHAT or WHOM? After the verb
She reads a book
What does she read? A book

He met her
Whom did he meet? Her

She eats an apple

The dog chases a fast and agile rabbit

The chef cooks a delicious meal

The artist paints a beautiful landscape

The teacher grades a stack of papers.

The musician plays a beautiful melody.

The photographer takes a stunning photograph.

The company launches an innovative product.

Indirect object: Is the person, thing or entity that benefits from or is affected by the action of
the verb (direct object). It often answers the question TO WHOM/FOR WHOM/FOR WHAT
after the verb
TO / FOR
She gave a gift to me
To whom did she gave A GIFT? ME

He sent an email to his friend


What did he send? AN EMAIL
To whom did he send AN EMAIL? HIS FRIEND

She gives a gift to her friend.

She offered her sister some advice.

He lent me his jacket for the cold weather.

I give my teacher a present.

The company offers its employees a bonus.

She teaches her students a new skill.

He shows his friends a video.
