Course Title : Principles and Practices of Management

Introduction

The objective of the course is to provide an understanding of basic concepts, principles and practices of
management. The aim is to inculcate the ability to apply multifunctional approach to organizational
objective. This course describes from a business administration perspective what a business is, how a
business organization works and what the role of a business administration professional is in a business.
In Principles and Practices of Management course, it is aimed to teach the students to look at things from
a management point of view and provides a toolbox with which business administration problems can be
seen in context and solved. This course gives an overview of, and an approach to, the entire organization
(i.e. in its totality) and puts the student in a position to comprehend every part within that whole, and then
from this perspective to arrive at solutions. It is also aimed to help students to improve their ability to
make decisions in business by providing them with a framework that they can use to identify, analyze,
and resolve managerial issues in business decision making.

Course Objectives:

1. To understand theoretical aspects, processes and principles, the scope of Management, its and
application to modern management practice
2. Illustrate and evaluate the importance of planning, organizing, directing and controlling in
decision making.
3. To analyse how the field of Management has evolved and its significant contributions
4. To analyse and apply the critical role of managers in modern organizational settings.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this course, the students will be able to
1. Understand the concepts related to “Management”.
2. Demonstrate the roles, skills and functions of management.
3. Analyse, diagnose and solve organizational problems and develop optimal managerial decisions.
4. Understand the complexities associated with management of human resources in the
organizations
5. Integrate the learning in handling the mentioned complexities.

Pedagogy:

The pedagogy will be a mix of Lecture, Discussion, Group exercises in class, Case Analysis,
Assignments, Quizzes and Project Presentation. Participants are expected to read the prescribed
readings/book chapter before attending the session, summarize and critique the readings and try to
identify the linkage between the prescribed readings for the session and those covered earlier.
