Design Plate (Script)

Design Plate 3 outlines the procedures for designing gravity and cantilever retaining walls, including calculations for active earth pressure, overturning moments, and soil pressure stability. It details the steps for determining the necessary steel reinforcement and development lengths according to NSCP codes. The document concludes with a summary of results and detailed drawings for both types of retaining walls.

DESIGN PLATE 3

Design Plate 3 covers gravity and cantilever retaining walls design. So, for the given situation (read
the problem and reflect to the site and soil conditions, and material properties).
(GRAVITY RETAINING WALL)

Let’s proceed to the procedure for the gravity retaining wall, first we set or assume baseline
dimensions for each of the components using some recommended proportions (read the preliminary design
table). Then compute for the Active Earth Pressure Coefficient and since it was stated at the given situation
that there will be no backfill placed in front at the toe of the retaining wall, then there’s no need to compute
for Passive Lateral Pressure.
To compute for the Active Earth Pressure Force, we will be needing the equivalent height of the
surcharge (h’), we have live load of 2.4 kPa from NSCP Table 205-1. Computing for Dead Load (read
surcharge height calculation in page 2) then solving for Active Earth Pressure force we have 62.87 kN.
Compute for the overturning moment we have, (read page 3 overturning moment). Now we have
two cases to be consider, first is the case where (read page 3). To compute the weight and its restoring
moment of the edge of the toe, individual weights are taken, as shown. (read the remaining parts)

Check for the maximum and minimum soil pressure and check for the stability (read page 4, left
side).
For the 2nd case, we have (read page 4, right side), same procedure at the first case (read the
remaining parts in page 4 and page 5).
(CANTILIVER RETAINING WALL)
Same process at the gravity retaining wall design (just read and say something same as the
procedure in gravity retaining wall until page 9 left).

For Stem and Key Design, we have Mu and the solve for 𝜌, using 𝜌 we can compute for the area and
number of steel needed. And for Horizontal shrinkage and temperature reinforcement, (read page 10, right).
Same as for Minimum and vertical steel reinforcement, calculate the area and the number of steel needed.
As for Curtailment of bars (read page 11 and continue discuss until Required Development Length).
As per NSCP code, we have required development length of (read the answer), and for the actual we have
(read the answer and page 13 right side).
As per NSCP code, the required splice length is (read the answer), check for the minimum tensile
reinforcement ratio and then compute the area and number of steel needed and its spacing, we have (read the
answer).

(Read page 14, right), compute for 𝜌 and then the area and number of steel needed and its spacing,
we have (read the answer). Shear will be check at a distance 315mm we have (read the answer and continue
reading until development length required) and solve for the area and steel needed and its spacing, we have
(read the answer).
For Slab Design, same process, solve for the area and steel needed and its spacing, we have (read the
answer). And lastly, check for the shear strength of the heel, and solve for the required development length.
(OVERALL RESULTS AND DRAWING)
This are the summary of the results for gravity and cantilever retaining wall design (page 18 &19),
and these are the detailed drawings (page 20).
