Chapter 3
Research Design and Methodology
This chapter is divided into three parts: (1) Purpose
of the Study and Research Design, (2) Methods, and (3)
Statistical Data Analysis Procedure.
Part One, Purpose of the Study and Research Design,
restates the purpose of the study, describes the research
design, and enumerates the variables used in the study.
Part Two, Method, describes the participants, the data-
gathering instrument and the research procedure employed in
the conduct of the study.
Part Three, Statistical Data Analysis Procedure,
discusses the descriptive and inferential statistics used in
the analysis of the data.
Purpose of the Study and Research Design
The present study will be conducted to determine the
ICT skills and quality of performance in literature using
various video-capturing applications among Senior High
School students.
This will be conducted during the first semester of the
school year 2021-2022 at Ivisan National High School
68
utilizing descriptive-correlational research design. A
descriptive correlational study is a study in which the
researcher is primarily interested in describing
relationships among variables, without seeking to establish
a causal connection. Descriptive research is a type of
research that is used to describe the characteristics of a
population. Descriptive research does not answer questions
about why a certain phenomenon occurs or what the causes
are. Answers to such questions are best obtained from
randomized and quasi-experimental studies, and a
correlational research refers to a non-experimental research
method which studies the relationship between two variables
with the help of statistical analysis. In market research,
correlational studies help in isolating variables and see
how they interact with each other. (Creswell, 2012).
The independent variable in this study is the ICT skill
while the dependent variable is the quality of perfromances.
The participants of this study will be the Grade 11
HUMSS students of Ivisan National High School for school
year 2022-2023.
The data needed for this study will be gathered through
the researcher-made test or questionnaire to assess the
student’s ICT, while the quality of performance will be
69
based from the scores using performance rubrics grading the
video-captured performances submitted by the students.
The data gathered will be tabulated, analyzed and
subjected to computer-processed Statistical Package for
Social Sciences (SPSS) software mean aiming to answer the
questions quantitatively. Descriptive statistics will be
utilized using mean and standard deviation; and inferential
statistics will be utilizing t-test for independent samples,
One-way ANOVA and Pearson’s r correlation set at .05 level
of significance.
Methods
Participants
The participants of this study will be the sixty (60)
Grade 11 HUMSS students of Ivisan National High School for
the school year 2022-2023. The study will be conducted
within the 1st semester. Participants will be chosen using
purposive sampling assigned randomly through “draw lots”
assigning to various video-capturing applications with
twenty (20) participants in each group. The groups and
distribution are as shown in Table 1.

Data-Gathering Instruments
Performance Assessment. In order to assess the ICT
skills of the participants throughout the study, a panel-
validated thirty (30)-item researcher-made questionnaire
adapted from Oguguo [Link]. (2020) will be developed. The
said instrument will be subjected to content validation and
reliability by FCU Thesis Examining Committee who were
experts in the field of ICT and Computer Literacy.
Suggestions and recommendations of the panel of experts
will be incorporated in the assessment of the students’
performances. The ratings for the performances will be based
on rubrics with criteria for content or relevance, delivery
and impact.
To interpret the scores obtained by the participants in
terms of their ICT skills among Office documents or MS Word,
spreadsheets or MS Excel, slides or MS PowerPoint, and MS
Publisher, utilizing search engines and exploring the
internet, the researcher will use the scale of means below:
Scale Description
4.21-5.00 Very High
71
3.41-4.20 High
2.61-3.40 Moderate
1.81-2.60 Low
1.00-1.80 Very Low
To interpret the scores obtained by the participants in
terms of the quality of their performance in Literature, the
researcher will use the scale of means below:
Scale Description
4.21-5.00 Advanced
3.41-4.20 Proficient
2.61-3.40 Approaching Proficiency
1.81-2.60 Developing
1.00-1.80 Beginner
Data-Gathering Procedures
Procedure in the gathering of the data will be
observing the COVID-19 health protocols. The researcher-made
instrument will be converted to Google Forms and
administered by sharing the link to the intended
participants. Towards the end of the first semester, the
researcher will require a performance video output in
Literature from the three groups using their designated
video-capture application. Three (3) Senior High School
Teachers will act as raters on the performance assessment.
These will be submitted to the statistician by the Filamer
Christian University–Graduate School. The differences in the
ICT skills and quality of performances will be done by
72
submitting the data to statistical analysis using
inferential statistical tool such as the One-way ANOVA to
generate the results needed to answer the statement of the
problem and the hypotheses in this study. The analysis of
the data will be presented in tabular form with its
corresponding textual interpretation and analysis.
Statistical Data Analysis Procedure
The data gathered from the study will be analyzed using
the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software.
The scores obtained from the instruments will be
utilized to determine the ICT skills and quality of
performance in literature using various video-capturing
applications among Senior High School students. To analyze
the data of this study, the researcher will be using the
following statistical tests:
Mean. This will be used in determining the level of ICT
skills and quality of performances in Literature of the
students using various video-capturing applications.
Standard Deviation. This will be used to ascertain the
dispersion of the means obtained from the test in the study.
One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). This will be used
to compare and determine the difference of means of ICT
Skills based on the video-capturing Applications used.
73
Likewise same statistical tool will be used to determine the
difference on Quality of Performances in Literature based on
the video-capturing Applications used.
Pearson’s r correlation. This will be used to determine
if there is a significant relationship between ICT skills
and quality of performances in Literature.
