The Importance of Psychology for Personal Life and Success
Studying psychology is an incredibly empowering experience, as it is like
having a user manual for your brain. It changes your outlook from being
judgmental to being understanding of the underlying causes of human
behavior.
Personal Growth and Self-Awareness
At its core, psychology teaches us the importance of self-regulation.
Understanding theories of emotional intelligence and stress management
allows a student to navigate the high-pressure environment of university life.
Example: Before taking this course, I used to feel overwhelmed during final
exams, which caused me to procrastinate. However, I realized that a certain
amount of stress is actually good for you. I used psychology theories of deep
breathing and cognitive restructuring to keep my stress levels optimal, which
helped me improve my grades significantly.
Enhancing Social Success and Communication
Success is not a one-man show; it depends upon how you relate to others.
Psychology offers valuable insights into human social influence, conformity,
and empathy.
Example: I had a huge argument with a group member while working on a
class project. Rather than getting angry, I decided to use what I had learned
from psychology, which was Active Listening and Confict Resolution.
1. The Importance of Psychology for Personal Life and Success
The study of psychology is a life-changing experience as it is the user’s
manual for the human brain. It changes the way we think from judgment to
understanding the causes of the behavior.
Personal Growth and Self-Awareness
First and foremost, at its core, psychology teaches the student the
importance of self-regulation. The student can better deal with the high-
pressure environment of university life by understanding the importance of
emotional intelligence and stress management.
Example Before this course, I used to feel overwhelmed during fnal exams. I
used to procrastinate as a result
Of feeling anxious. However, I have learned that a certain level of stress is
actually needed. I have learned
How to effectively utilize deep breathing and cognitive restructuring
techniques to maintain the optimal level
Of stress. This has greatly helped me to improve my grades.
Enhancing Social Success and Communication
Success is not a one-person job; it is also dependent upon our relationship
with other people.
Psychology has helped us understand social influence, conformity, and
empathy.
Example I used to have a big fight with a member of the group during a
group project. However, instead
Of getting angry with the person, I decided to apply what I lerned from Active
Listening and Confict
Resolution. I tried to find the hidden motive behind the person’s frustration
and realized that the person
Was feeling unheard. By validating the person’s feelings, we were able to
resolve the problem and fnish the
Project successfully.
Neuroplasticity is defined as “the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by
forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity is an
exceptionally important concept in early childhood, as it is during this period
that synaptic pruning and myelination are in an active stage. Studies have
shown that environmental stimulation and learning can directly impact brain
structure, including changes in cortical thickness and dendritic branching.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies also support neuroplasticity,
as they have shown that even in adults, there is significant brain plasticity,
which aids in recovery from injury. The concept of neuroplasticity is
significant to educational psychology and rehabilitation medicine.
Critical Thinking and Decision Making
The module teaches us about cognitive biases, which are mental shortcuts
that cause us to be wrong.
By becoming aware of confirmation bias, I can become a better decision-
maker.
Example: When deciding on my major, I was initially influenced by what
everyone else was doing.
Psychology taught me to become aware of my own intrinsic motivation
rather than following the crowd into a path that does not truly fit my
personality.
2. Is Psychology Helpful for Ethiopians?
Yes, psychology is not only helpful but also essential in the current Ethiopian
context.
This, in turn, encourages us to integrate our faith and traditional support with
professional clinical intervention.
Healing from Collective Trauma and Conflict
Ethiopia has experienced different kinds of social and political conficts.
Psychology, in particular, Trauma Informed Care and Peace Psychology, plays
an important role in healing our nation.
Reconciliation: Understanding In-group vs. Out-group dynamics can also help
us cultivate empathy for people with different ethnic and social backgrounds.
This will give us tools for dialogue and psychological processing that are
essential for reconciliation.
Enhance Education and Parenting
The Ethiopian Educational Roadmap aims to produce productive citizens.
Psychology can also contribute in the following ways:
Effective Learning Moving away from rote memorization and more towards
Active Learning strategies, such as those discussed in our modules.
Parenting Moving away from authoritarian parenting and more towards
balanced and authoritative parenting that installs independence and
confidence in our future Ethiopians.
Economic and Organizational Productivity
As Ethiopia industrializes, so too does the need for Industrial Organizational
Psychology. This branch of psychology can help Ethiopia’s businesses
optimize their employees’ motivation, turnover, and effciency by viewing
their employees not just as workers, but as human beings with psychological
needs.
Finally, psychology in Ethiopia, we need to indigenize it, and this means that
we need to take the scientific theories we learn and apply them in a way that
respects our local values, languages, and communal way of living. When we
mix the modern science we learn with our “Chewa” culture, we create a
powerful tool for development.
