Course Description
The course deals with the discussion and application of the basic concepts, theories, and principles on
Computer Networking and will provide hands-on laboratory activities on computer networking using
Cisco Packet Tracer. It focuses on the configuration of TCP/IP, routers and switches, network security
and wireless fidelity with the integration of real-world insights that students observed during the
experiential learning.
Course Outline
SCHEDULE TOPIC
- Introduction to Packet Tracer
Introduction to CISCO
Familiarizing Packet Tracer interface
Week 1-3 Workspace, toolbar, and other available devices
- Basic Network Configuration
Adding routers, switches, and end devices to the workspace
Connecting devices using appropriate cables
- Device Configuration
Accessing and configuring routers and switches using the command
line interface (CLI)
Setting IP addresses, subnet masks, and default gateways
Week 3-5
- VLANs and Inter-VLAN Routing
Creating and configuring Virtual LANs (VLANs)
Implementing Inter-VLAN routing to allow communication between
VLANs
- Routing Protocols
Configuring and troubleshooting protocols such as RIP, OSPF or
EIGRP
Week 6-8 Routing table and routing metric concepts
- Security Features
Basic Security features like access controls lists (ACLs)
Port Security and DHCP Snooping
Week 9 Midterm Exam
- Wireless Networking
Configuring wireless networks
Week 10-13 Security options for wireless, such as WPA and WPA2
- Network Address Translation (NAT)
Configuring NAT to allow private network access to the internet
- Quality of Services (QoS)
Implementing QoS to prioritize network traffic and optimize
performance
Week 14-15 - Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting common network issues
Debugging commands and tools within Packet Tracer
