PRACTICAL NO: 07
KARL PEARSON & SPEARMAN’S COEFFICIENTS
1. Define Karl Pearson's coefficient of correlation. Find Karl Pearson's coefficient of
correlation, for each of the following.
a) Σ(x-x¯)2 =120, Σ(y-y¯)2 =235, Σ(x-x¯) (y-y¯) = -139
b) n=16, Σx =12.3, Σ y= 213, Σxy =183, Σx2 =15.76, Σy2 =3600
c) For a bivariate data the sum of squares of difference between the ranks is 22. The rank
correlation coefficient is 0.9. Find the number of pairs of observations.
2. The coefficient of correlation between 2 variables x and y is 0.32. Their covariance is 15.
The variance of x is 9. Find the standard deviation of y
3. Compute the Karl Pearson’s correlation coefficient between the salesmen experience &
commission earned for the Following:
Salesmen experience in 3 2 3 4 1 2
years
Commission earned in 40 45 43 35 50 48
thousand of rupees
4. Calculate Karl Pearson’s coefficients of correlation between the price & demand from the
following data and interpret the result.
Price in Rs. 4 2 5 7 3 4 8
Demand 5 7 8 6 5 4 6
5. Find the coefficient of rank correlation for the following data
Rank I 6 1 5 7 3 4 2
Rank 2 5 4 3 6 7 2 1
6. Find the coefficient of rank correlation for the following data.
Marks I 60 81 59 97 93 74 72
Marks 2 85 84 63 86 70 52 61
7. Seven participants in a music competition were assigned score by two judges as follows:
X 54 60 59 45 60 45 58
Y 58 45 30 48 49 37 58
Compute Spearman's rank correlation coefficient
