Course Title Dynamics of Structures

Course No(s) ST ZG551

Credit Units 4

Course Description
This course equips students with conceptual understanding, analytical skills, and numerical techniques to
evaluate the dynamic response of structures subjected to time-dependent loads. It covers the formulation of
equations of motion, and the analysis of free and forced vibrations in single- and multi- degrees-of-freedom
systems. Students will learn to evaluate structural vibration response using modal superposition and
numerical integration methods. Emphasis is placed on seismic analysis using response spectrum and time-
history approaches.
Course Objectives
No. Course Objective
CO1 Formulate and solve equations of motion for SDOF and MDOF structural systems under dynamic
loading.
CO2 Analyse vibration response for various excitation types, including harmonic, arbitrary loads and
support excitations
CO3 Evaluate seismic response of structures using modal analysis, numerical integration, and
response spectrum methods.
CO4 Expose students to finite element methods and vibration control strategies for the dynamic
analysis and design of structures.
