Good [morning/afternoon] everyone. Today, I want to talk to you about a right


that’s easy to overlook because we experience it every day: freedom of
expression. Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that
everyone has the right to share their thoughts, beliefs, and ideas without fear.
Think about how powerful that is. It’s a right that gives us the chance to be
ourselves, to share our dreams, and to challenge unfairness. Imagine this
blank paper as a space for your voice, a place where you’re free to write
whatever you want. Sadly, for many people around the world, that space is
not available to them.
Freedom of expression isn’t just about saying what we think—it’s the
backbone of change. Think about every major step forward in history, like civil
rights or women’s suffrage. None of those changes would have been possible
without people having the freedom to speak up. When we protect this right,
we create a society that grows, learns, and improves. But when it’s taken
away, people lose the ability to challenge wrongs or suggest better ways of
doing things.
But here’s the reality: even today, many people don’t have the ability to use
their “paper.” In countries like China and North Korea, people face harsh
punishments for speaking out or even sharing information. Journalists and
ordinary people are thrown in jail for posting online or reporting the truth.
Imagine if you couldn’t post what you really thought on social media or
couldn’t talk about important issues because you feared punishment. For
millions of people, that’s a daily reality.
So why does this matter to us here? Because in a world where information
flows so freely, a threat to freedom of expression anywhere can affect us all.
We live in a connected world, where information is shared across borders.
When freedom of expression is restricted somewhere, it’s a reminder that we
need to protect it everywhere—including here.
As I show you this blank paper once again, remember it’s not just a piece of
paper. It’s a symbol of our right to think, create, and challenge. Let’s not take
this right for granted. Let’s stand up for freedom of expression, support those
who are denied it, and remember how important it is to have the space to
“speak our truth.” Thank you.
