Question 1
a) What is your least favorite IT/IS/Computing related job? Describe this job in detail.
I like almost all the jobs related to the IT field, but my least favorite job would be,
becoming an IT teacher. Not every person in Sri Lanka has the access to technology so it
can be quite challenging in some areas. You can either be a teacher for school students,
university students or even elderly people who require IT knowledge. IT teaching
requires lots of attention and good communication. Topics such as computer languages,
binary and other number systems, the process of a computer and so on are hard to explain
if it is the first time you are learning them. So your techniques should be quite
understandable. But you get the chance to shape the lives of other people by sharing your
knowledge.
b) State your reasons personal or otherwise for not liking the above mentioned
occupation.
First and foremost, the salary of a teacher is not impressive. So, after spending a lot for
education I would love to do a job with the salary worth the amount spent. Teaching may
seem easy but honestly it is a very difficult task. You should have some special qualities
and talents to become a teacher. Your communication style should be understandable.
Patience is a must because you have to deal with different types of people. You should
also have the ability to explain anything maybe in a simple way or in depth. You can’t
always limit your working time to 6-9 hours. It is stressful, there can be internal conflicts
when you work under a staff.
c) For some unforeseen reason, the above mentioned IT/IS/Computing is in much
demand in the industry when you graduate. What would you do? Justify and
explain your answer.
If the job is in demand, I think it is best to apply for that because as soon as we graduate
we don’t have much work experience. We should always do what we love but as a start I
think it would be okay to do any job in order to collect experience. So if it is in deman
that is even better. I would be able tolerate the hardships for some time.

a) What is your favorite IT/IS/Computing related job that you would like to do in
10 years’ time? Describe this job in detail.
My favourite job to do in 10 years’ time would be a “Data Scientist”. Data scientists
are a new breed of analytical data expert who have the technical skills to solve
complex problems. A data scientist is an analytical data expert with technical skills
and the ability to solve complex problems. A data scientist cannot work alone. They
need to work with company executives to develop strategies etc. They help
businesses improve their operations and get an edge over competitors. I think in 10
years’ time, in Sri Lanka data scientist will have become a high demand job title. In
other countries many companies are eager to hire skilled data scientists. Most data
scientists hold an advance degree.
b) What are the short term plans you must take, to achieve the above mentioned
career?
In depth knowledge of certain areas are required in this field. I would state the
following as my short term plans to achieve my goal. Programming is an essential
part of a data scientist. So I have started learning two languages and will continue
studying more in the future. I’ll start doing a diploma in data science and then
continue it. I’m doing my best to complete my IT degree with colors. Ill have to pay
more attention on programming languages, statistical analysis, data visualization etc.
c) What are the long term plans you must take, to achieve the above mentioned
career?
My first long term step was enrolling for a Data Science & Business Analyst degree
program. My first attempt failed. So I went with another degree that would help
achieve my goals. Since data scientists are highly educated one degree will never be
enough. I will graduate with a first class degree in IT.
