Science Module: Volcanoes
Grade Level: High School
Subject: Earth Science
Topic: Volcanoes
I. Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, students should be able to:
Define what a volcano is.
Identify the parts of a volcano.
Explain how volcanoes erupt.
Describe the different types of volcanoes.
Understand the effects of volcanic eruptions.
II. Introduction
A volcano is one of nature’s most powerful features. It can create new land, but it can also
cause destruction. Volcanoes form when molten rock from inside the Earth reaches the surface.
Studying volcanoes helps us understand Earth’s structure and how it changes over time.
III. Main Content
A. What is a Volcano?
A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust where magma, gases, and ash escape to the
surface. When magma reaches the surface, it is called lava.
B. Parts of a Volcano
Magma Chamber – stores molten rock.
Vent – opening where magma comes out.
Crater – bowl-shaped top.
Cone – sides formed by lava and ash.
C. How Volcanoes Erupt
Pressure builds up inside the Earth due to gases in magma. When the pressure becomes too
strong, magma is forced out through the vent, causing an eruption.
D. Types of Volcanoes
Shield Volcano – wide and gently sloping.
Cinder Cone – small but steep.
Composite Volcano – tall and explosive.
E. Effects of Volcanoes
Destroys property and land.
Produces fertile soil.
Can affect climate.
Creates new landforms.
IV. Activities / Exercises
Draw and label a volcano.
Research one famous volcano in the Philippines.
Answer: Why do people still live near volcanoes?
Group discussion about volcanic hazards.
V. Assessment / Quiz
What is a volcano?
Name two parts of a volcano.
How does a volcano erupt?
List two types of volcanoes.
Give one good and one bad effect of volcanoes.
VI. Summary
Volcanoes are openings in the Earth where magma, ash, and gases escape. They shape the
Earth’s surface and affect life in many ways. Understanding volcanoes helps people prepare for
hazards and appreciate Earth’s natural processes.
