Background
In this week's lecture, we discussed Agile Project Management and the Rolling Wave
approach. Traditional projects often fail when we try to plan every detail years in advance for
an uncertain future. Instead, Rolling Wave planning focuses on high-detail planning for the
immediate future (the next "wave") while keeping long-term goals high-level and flexible.
Scenario: The KKUIC "Green Campus" Initiative
You have been appointed as the Project Manager for a new sustainability initiative at KKUIC.
Your goal is to develop a "Green Campus Mobile App" that helps students reduce food
waste and track their carbon footprint on campus.
Because student habits and technical requirements are currently uncertain, you must use a
Rolling Wave approach to manage this project.
Instructions
Please complete the following three sections: Part 1: Defining the Near-Term Wave (The
Science). List three (3) specific, detailed tasks you will execute in the next two weeks
(Iteration 1). These tasks should focus on gathering information or solving immediate
technical hurdles.
Plan for the next 2 weeks:
- Design and distribute a student survey: Prepare a short survey of 5–7 questions for
150 students in order to gather information about their food waste behaviors in the
cafeteria. This survey will help collect key quantitative insights (for example, average
weekly food waste per student) for your initial concept designs and for determining
where to emphasize your app.
- Conduct stakeholder interviews: Meet with cafeteria staff and sustainability officers to
understand operational processes, technical requirements, and some limitations within
their operations. This will serve as a basis for understanding what is reasonable to
achieve as well as identifying the areas where an app can provide the most value.
- Create a prototype of the basic app features: Create a simple, interactive prototype
focusing on food logging and carbon footprint tracking. Early testing will assist in
provide insight into potential technology concerns and user experience concerns, and
potential areas for integration into other parts of the school.
Part 2: High-Level Future Planning (The Vision)
Identify two (2) high-level project goals scheduled for 3–6 months from now. These goals
should be currently "vague" because you lack the data to plan them in detail yet.
- Launch Beta Version of Green Campus App: Release a beta app for a selected group
of students to allow them to track their food waste reduction and carbon footprint The
exact feature set will be flexible and grow in response to feedback and data from
Iteration 1.
- Implement Gamification and Rewards: Introduce incentives such as point systems,
badges, or leaderboards will provide the incentive to encourage continued
participation. Design elements related to these features will also be determined based
on feedback from students after they participate in the first round of testing.
Part 3: The Socio-Technical Analysis (The Art)
Based on the Socio-Technical approach discussed in Chapter 1:
● Identify one Technical challenge (e.g., app coding, data security) you expect to face.
● Identify one Sociocultural challenge (e.g., changing student behavior, getting faculty
support) you expect to face.
- Technical Challenge: Ensuring data security and privacy of student activity and
carbon footprint data while integrating real-time tracking from campus facilities.
Addressing this problem is crucial for building trust and active involvement.
- Sociocultural Challenge: Students may already have an established pattern of food
consumption and some students may have difficulty changing these behaviors.
Students need to be encouraged and supported to develop new sustainable behaviors
by employing engagement strategies using both technical solutions as well as other
support mechanisms to create a seamless and motivating user experience.
