INTRODUCTION
A consumer is a person who buys goods or services to satisfy his or her needs. In today’s market,
consumers face many problems like cheating, overcharging, and low-quality products. To protect
consumers from such unfair practices, consumer rights were introduced. Consumer awareness
helps people to make correct decisions and protects them from exploitation.
WHO IS A CONSUMER
A consumer is a person who purchases goods or services for personal use and not for resale.
Consumers play an important role in the market. They can be offline consumers who buy from local
shops or online consumers who shop through e-commerce platforms. For example, a student
buying a notebook for study is a consumer.
CONSUMER RIGHTS
1. Right to Safety – Protection against hazardous goods.
2. Right to Information – Right to know about quality, price, and ingredients.
3. Right to Choose – Freedom to choose from a variety of products.
4. Right to be Heard – Consumer’s voice must be listened to.
5. Right to Redressal – Right to get compensation for unfair practices.
6. Right to Consumer Education – Right to knowledge about consumer rights.
DUTIES OF A CONSUMER
A consumer should always check the MRP and expiry date before buying a product. It is the duty of
a consumer to ask for a bill, use products carefully, and report unfair practices. A responsible
consumer should be aware and informed.
CONSUMER EXPLOITATION
Consumer exploitation means cheating consumers for profit. Common types include overcharging,
adulteration, and false advertisements. For example, selling expired food items at full price is
consumer exploitation.
CONSUMER COURTS
Consumer courts are special courts set up to protect consumer rights. There are three levels of
consumer courts: District Forum, State Commission, and National Commission. These courts
provide justice and compensation to consumers.
AWARENESS & CONCLUSION
Consumer awareness is very important in today’s world. An aware consumer can protect himself
from unfair practices. Education and awareness help in building a fair market. “An aware consumer
is a protected consumer.”
