Heat Energy and Home Design

Criteria D: Reflecting on Science

1. Introduction: Location and Climate

My house is designed for the Middle East specifically Egypt where the climate is ridiculously
hot and dry. The summers are extremely hot with a lot of sunlight, and the winters are
somewhat a normal temperature. Because of this, my house design focuses on keeping the
space cool and at a comfortable temperature. It uses natural cooling methods like green roofs
and thick walls, proper ventilation to keep the house from inside cold and comfortable.

2. Thermal Energy Background

Thermal energy is the energy that comes from heat. Heat can be transferred in three different
ways: conduction, convection, radiation. Conduction is when heat moves through solid
materials like metal or even walls the best heat conducting materials are metals. Convection
is when heat moves through fluids like liquids or air /gas like the hot air rising in your room
that’s why you air conditioning is always at the top of the room to cool down the air.
Radiation is when heat travels in waves like the sun heating up the earth. Insulation helps
heat stop from escaping or by entering by slowing down conduction and convection. Building
and houses use the same method to keep houses warm in the winter and to keep it out in the
summer. Reflective material like shiny surfaces is used to reflect radiation and to stop too
much heat from coming in.

3. Description of Your Design Ideas

My house includes four heat management features they include solar panels a green
roof, thermal insulation walls and rainwater collection system. Solar panels get clean
energy from the sun which lowers the need for electricity from fossil fuels. The green
roof provides a natural insulation and keeps the house cooler. The thermal walls made
from natural materials like mud brick and clay and straw help trap cool air and block
out heat. The rainwater system helps reduce water waste and keeps the garden and
greenhouse working without using too much water. These features all help make the
house more comfortable and eco friendly.

4. Scientific Explanation of Features

[Link] panels work by absorbing sunlight and turning it into electricity . This feature
uses radiation, where the sun’s energy is transferred to the [Link] help reduce the
need for other types of energy that can harm the environment. They work the best in
sunny and hot weathers like in Egypt but sometimes they are expensive to install .

2. Green roofs: the green roof feature uses plants to cover the top of my house . It
decreases heat by stopping radiation from entering and keeps the house cool by
making a layer of shade on top of the house. It also helps with insulation which
stopsconduction of heat through the roof . One negative is that it needs maintenance
and watering .

3. Thermal insulation walls: the walls that I chose are made it insulate the house and
keep out heat in the summer and bring in cold in the winter They are made using
natural materials like mud brick clay and straw they are good insulators they slow
down conduction of heat they also help keep cold air in and keep hot air out they are
very helpful in desert climates like in my situation in Egypt.

4. Rain water collection system : this system collects rain water using gutters on the
side of the house and stores it under ground in a tank so it can stay cool and not heat
up science it is not in direct heat but it also helps the environment by saving water it
works well in places with very minimal rain it also needs a filter to keep it clean .

5. Overall Reflection and Global Context

I think my house desgin does an excellent job using science to solve real life problems
in hot and dry climates like Egypt it uses solar panels and green roofs to manage that
heat and insulation to keep the house comfortable without using a lot of electricity. I
learned a lot about how thermal energy and how different materials affect heat
transfer. This made me realize how important it is to build houses that help the
environment and save resources. If more homes were built like this, we could use less
energy and have a better future. My desgin shows how we can save the planet and
sustain it using science in smart ways.
