Driving Question

“How do internships in India shape the career

readiness of college students, and what do the
trends in fields, sources, outcomes, and skill
development reveal about their role in
building a skilled workforce?”
What is an Internship?

An internship is a short-term work experience where students get a chance

to learn how real jobs work. It helps students understand practical work
along with what they study in books. Many students do internships to gain
experience, improve their resumes, and explore different career options.

Internships also help students gain confidence and interact with

professionals. Sometimes, good performance during an internship can lead
to a job offer. However, in India, some internships are unpaid or offer low
stipends, and interns may be given basic tasks. Even then, internships are
useful for learning and preparing for the future.

Eligibility of Interns in India:

1. Educational Requirement : Internships in India are mainly meant for
college students pursuing diploma, undergraduate, or postgraduate
courses. Many private companies also allow recent graduates to apply.
2. College Permission/Requirement : Most internships require a college
permission letter or recommendation, especially during the academic
session. Government platforms like the AICTE Internship Portal often
make this compulsory.
3. Years of study : Students usually become eligible after completing the
first or second year of their course. Final year students are often
preferred for technical, research, or corporate internships.
4. Academic Performance : Some organisations ask for a minimum
percentage (in CBSE Boards/Entrances) or CGPA. Many startups and
private companies focus more on skills, projects, and interest rather
than marks.
5. Age and Employment Status : Applicants are generally required to be
students and not full-time employees. Government internships may
also have specific age limits.

Stipend:
Some Internships are unpaid, while government internships such as DRDO,
ISRO, and PSU programs provide a stipend.

According to Linkedin various other credible sources

● Paid internship for students: Ranges from ₹2,500 a month (mostly for virtual
internships) to ₹15,000 a month.
● Unpaid internship: In the case of students (since internships are a part of
coursework)/ NGO/ hiring an apprentice.
● National average: ₹12,264 per month
● Technical fields: ₹5,000 - ₹12,000 per month
● Creative field: as high as ₹15,000 per month

Duration:

● Short: 1-3 months ; Common in content writing, social media, NGOs, event
management, and virtual internships.
● Medium: 3-6 months ; Usually seen in marketing, data analysis, finance, HR,
and software support roles.
● Long: 6+ months ; Mostly in engineering, core IT, research, product
development, and corporate roles with job prospects.

Responses

1. Interviewee : Robin Chaudhary

Age : 45
Profession - Head Teacher (GPS Jasana)

Answer 1

I think internships are very important these days. They give students a real taste of
how things work outside the classroom. Many times, students don’t really
understand what a job feels like until they actually do one. Internships help them
gain that understanding early, which makes them more confident and career ready.

Answer 2

The biggest skills are communication and teamwork. When students work with
professionals, they learn how to talk, listen, and cooperate. They also pick up
practical habits like punctuality, responsibility, and time management which are
just as important as book knowledge.

Answer 3

Right now, management and media seem to offer a lot of opportunities because
every company needs people for marketing, communication, and digital work.
Engineering and IT also have good internships, but mostly in cities. Rural students
still find it harder to get such chances.
Answer 4

The main challenge is access. Many students, especially from government or
small-town schools, don’t know where to look for internships. Some internships
don’t pay, which makes it tough for students who can’t afford to work for free.
Guidance and awareness are still missing in many places.

Answer 5

They’re trying — I can see more effort now than before. But smaller colleges,
especially in rural areas, still need more support. If every college had a proper
internship or career cell that guided students, it would make a big difference.

Answer 6

Internships should have a proper plan — not just random work. Students should get
tasks that help them learn something real. Companies should also offer at least a
small stipend, so all students can afford to take part. And teachers should stay in
touch to make sure students are learning something useful.

Answer 7

Yes, definitely. Employers prefer students who already have some real-world
experience. An internship gives them that edge. It also helps students understand
what kind of work they actually enjoy, so they make better career choices later.
Answer 8

Go in with an open mind. Don’t worry too much about money or position at first —
just focus on learning. Be on time, be respectful, and ask questions. Every small task
teaches you something if you pay attention. The experience will stay with you long
after the internship ends.

2. Interviewee : Yash Sharma

Age : 20
About : 3rd Year Student - [Link] CSE

Answer 1

Honestly, I think internships are super important. You get to see what actually
happens in the industry instead of just learning theory in schools/colleges. It gives
you confidence and helps you figure out what kind of work you enjoy — whether it’s
development, data, AI, or something else.

Answer 2

Honestly, I feel it's an option A technical stuff but you learn a lot more than just
that. For me, communication and teamwork were also one of the biggest takeaways.
I also learned how to manage time properly and how to handle real life problems
when things don’t go as planned.

Answer 3
In my field, Computer Science, there are plenty — software development, web
development, data science, and even AI or cybersecurity. Apart from tech, I’ve seen
lots of opportunities in marketing and media too. Basically, anything related to
digital skills has demand right now.

Answer 4

Finding a good one is tough. Many companies ask for prior experience, which is
funny because internships are supposed to give you that experience. Also, a lot of
internships are unpaid or give very small stipends, so it’s not possible for everyone
to take them. Sometimes mentors are too busy to guide you properly.

Answer 5

My college does try and we have a placement cell which provide opportunities. But
honestly, most of us rely on LinkedIn, Internshala, or personal links. I think colleges
should build stronger industry connections and maybe conduct workshops to
prepare students for applying.

Answer 6

Internships should be more structured. Some companies just make interns do

repetitive or irrelevant work. If they give proper projects, mentorship, and
feedback, students will actually learn something useful. A certificate alone doesn’t
matter if you dont gain skills.

Answer 7

Definitely, yes. When you apply for placements, companies always look at your
internship experience first. It also gives you projects to show on your resume and
helps you perform better in interviews. Even one good internship can make a big
difference.
Answer 8

Start early and don’t wait till the last year. Focus on learning, not just getting a
certificate. Even if it’s unpaid, take it seriously — it can open doors later. Also, don’t
be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes because that’s how you will actually
learn.

3. Interviewee : Tanishka Sharma

Age : 21
About : 3rd Year - [Link] Microbiology

Answer 1
Very important. In microbiology, you need real lab experience. An internship helps
you understand how actual labs work, not just what we read in books.

Answer 2
Mostly lab skills — culturing, using instruments, maintaining sterile conditions. I
also learned patience and proper documentation because lab work takes time.

Answer 3
Pharma companies, research labs, hospitals, and food testing labs. These have the
most practical work for microbiology students.

Answer 4
Finding a good internship is hard. Many places don’t advertise. Most internships are
unpaid, and sometimes interns only get to observe instead of actually doing
experiments.
Answer 5
They try, but not really. We mostly find internships ourselves. More tie-ups with
labs and hospitals would help a lot.

Answer 6
Give interns more hands-on work instead of just basic tasks. And proper guidance
from mentors makes a big difference.

Answer 7
Yes, definitely. Practical experience matters a lot in microbiology. It makes your
resume stronger.

Answer 8
Ask questions, stay curious, and write down whatever you learn. Don’t be scared of
making mistakes — that’s how you improve.

4. Interviewee : Ritika Ma’am

About : Career Counsellor of DPS Greater Faridabad

Answer 1
Internships are increasingly important, as they give students a realistic
understanding of workplace expectations and help them make informed career
choices. They also build confidence and provide early professional exposure, which
is particularly valuable in today’s competitive environment.

Answer 2
While technical skills vary by field, the strongest and most consistent gains are in
communication, teamwork, leadership in small responsibilities, and time
management. These transferable skills often have a far greater long-term impact.
Answer 3
Management, Design, Engineering, Media. These sectors generally offer structured
internships with defined roles, mentorship, and learning outcomes. However,
meaningful opportunities exist across many emerging fields as well, especially in
start-ups and social impact organisations.

Answer 4
Most students struggle with limited networks, unclear expectations, and
internships that may not always be well-supervised. Balancing academic
commitments can also be challenging.

Answer 5
Many institutions are making progress, but there is still room for improvement in
terms of structured career services, industry linkages, and active mentorship.

Answer 6
Internships become far more enriching when organisations provide clear role
descriptions, assign mentors, and ensure regular feedback. Colleges can strengthen
the experience by preparing students beforehand, like resume building,
communication skills, and understanding workplace etiquette. A closer
collaboration between academia and industry would also help.

Answer 7
Yes
Employers often favour candidates who have practical experience, even at an
introductory level. Internships demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and a
willingness to learn like qualities that directly improve employability.
Answer 8
Start with an open mind and treat it as a learning experience rather than a test. Ask
questions, observe workplace culture, take feedback positively, and try to
contribute beyond your assigned tasks. Keeping a small journal of daily learning
also helps students reflect and grow. Most importantly, choose an organisation that
provides guidance, not just tasks.

5. Interviewee : Kumar Gaurav

Age : 47
About: Senior Director of Technology, Publicis Sapient

Answer 1
It is critical as it gives them real insights into business work / corporate job and
serious exposure into how their academic skills will be further nurtured to generate
outcomes for business. Academics lays down the foundation. Internship gives them
exposure.

Answer 2
Working like a team

How to use your knowledge to generate business outcomes

How to understand what drives business

Exposure to update tools and processes

Answer 3

Manufacturing

Technology

Electronics

Automotive

Answer 4
Exposure to right place for internship.

Students go after big brands / big logos to belong. This is a bit inaccurate

Students should proactively find places they would like to intern at.

This should be stepping stone towards a ongoing term career, not a checkbox item.

Answer 5
I think some do place students at good places based on merit and interests. Rest
don’t.

Answer 6
Colleges should reach out to Alumnis of their institutions or other industry experts
for better guidance to students.

Internship is a means to a goal.

Students should research ahead of time. Students should prepare their credentials
ahead of time to perform better at internships, that can translate into proper jobs.

Colleges can help them do this.

Answer 7
Ideally it should if students take it seriously. Sometimes
Answer 8
Companies providing internship usually are serious about spending their energy,
time and resources on allowing interns to be a part of regular teams. Students
should make the most of it.

I would suggest

- Research which company to go for.

- Read about their products and services.

- Read about their culture and what they value

- Work hard to belong

- Trust me - nobody wants a good intern go

Internship in India : The Final
Report

Internship has become a significant component of Indian education. It gives

students actual work experience during their time at college, paving the way
for future employment. Indian colleges in the recent past have begun to
encourage internships as a method of linking class learning with industry
needs. Now, many students view internships as the gateway to their careers.
This study examines the role of internships in India in assisting students,
advantages and disadvantages of having them, and their role in developing an
efficient workforce for the country.

Which fields offer more internships and why?

Internships in India are offered in most fields, but some fields are more
sought after than others. The statistics reveal that the most sought-after
field is management, and 46.5% of students take up internships there. This is
due to the fact that management internships provide students with skills in
business, leadership, and organization that are applicable in nearly any
profession.

The second most trending domain is media, in which 20.8% of students get
in as interns. The growth of social media, digital marketing, and online spaces
has generated huge opportunities for youth to work on communication and
content development.

Engineering is the third with 14.9% of interns. Most engineering students in

India get into technical companies, IT organizations, or startups to
implement their technical skills.
Design and architecture internships account for 7.9%, providing innovative
students with the opportunity to implement actual projects. The rest of 9.9%
belong to other disciplines such as law, medicine, and social work.

This indicates that internships do not belong to just one sector. Rather, they
encompass a broad spectrum of subjects, assisting students across various
disciplines.

What students anticipated from internships and their

respective outcomes

One major question for students is whether internships lead to job offers. In
India, the results are mixed. Data shows that:

● 28.6% of students wanted an offer but did not get one.

● 3% received and accepted an offer.

● 10.9% received an offer but chose not to accept it.

● 2% were unsure about their offers.

● 4% had other reasons.

● The largest group, 51.5% did not get an offer and also didn’t want one.

This shows that for many Indian students, internships are not always about
getting a job immediately. Instead, they see internships as a way to gain
experience, learn new skills, and improve their future chances of
employment.
How do students get one?

Students in India find internships through different sources. The most

common way is college placements, which provide 30% of internships. This
shows that colleges are playing a big role in promoting internships and
connecting students with companies.

Lecturers also help students by guiding them toward opportunities,

accounting for 22.9% of internships. Private contracts make up 17.1%, where
students get internships through personal networks or family connections.

Public advertisements account for 15.7%, while 14.3% of internships come

from open applications, where students directly contact companies. This
variety of sources shows that both colleges and students are actively working
to secure internships.

Reasons Why Students Join Internships

Indian students join internships for different reasons, but most of them want
to improve their skills and get exposure to the workplace. According to the
data:

● 15% join to gain practical knowledge.

● 14% want to improve communication skills.

● 10% aim to understand the industry better.

● 7% want real work experience.

● 7% focus on planning their career path.

● 7% want to learn work operations.
