Practical No: 4: Note taking and Note Making
LLO 5.1.: Explain the types of note taking with examples and make notes on any one topic related
to your curriculum.
CO: C312002.2: Develop listening skills through active listening and note taking
1. Differentiate note making and note taking:
Note taking starts with jotting down others' ideas, and note making is all about what you
actively create after that.
Note taking requires more active listening, while note making requires more active
engagement.
2. Importance of Note taking:
Note-taking captures information we see or hear during a presentation. Note-taking enables us
to increase understanding, retain more information and save time. Following are the importance
of Note Taking:
Enables You to Capture Every Point: Most of us speak faster than we can write, which is
why effective note-taking strategies are essential to capture every point made.
Aids Recall: Note-taking is a proven process that aids in recalling information, particularly
when using handwritten notes.
Aids Learning: Note-taking promotes ‘The Generation Effect’, which can boost your
ability to store information in your memory.
Helps to Develop Creativity: Using index cards to note ideas or concepts aids in creating
new concepts or ways of thinking.
Supports Reflection: Reflecting on what you’ve learned is much easier with an accurate set
of notes to refer to.
3. Explain the types of note taking with examples:
a) Cornell Method:
Developed by a Cornell University education professor in the 1940s. It involves into three
sections: A Cue column on the left, a Note column on the right, and a Summary area at the
bottom of the page. For example, Cornell Method can be useful to take notes on
Communication process, Importance of communication, Types of communication, Barrier and
types of barrier, Types of listening and 7 Cs of communication.
b) Outline or Bullet Method
A series of headings and sub-headings (topics and sub-topics) is the basis of this method.
Heading and sub-headings can be differentiated by indentation, dashes, or bullet points. For
example, Outline Method is suitable for almost all the topics like Communication Cycle,
Importance of communication, Types of communication, Barrier and types of barrier, Types of
listening, 7 Cs of communication.
c) Flow Chart.
A flowchart is a diagram that shows the steps in a process. Flowcharts are often used for
visualizing the sequence of actions or information needed for training, documenting, planning,
and decision-making. For example, flow chart can be used to take notes on Communication
Cycle.
d) Mind mapping:
A mind map involves writing down a central theme and thinking of new and related ideas which
radiate out from the centre. A mind map is a diagram used to visually organize information into
a hierarchy, showing relationships among pieces of the whole. For example, Mind mapping
Method can be used to take notes on types of communication, types of barrier, Types of
listening, etc.
4. Techniques and tips for Note taking:
Write phrases, not full sentences.
Take notes in your own words.
Structure your notes with headings, subheadings and numbered lists.
Use colour to highlight major sections, main points and diagrams.
Underline, circle, star, etc. to identify key information, examples, definitions, etc.
If you miss something, write key words, skip a few spaces, and get the information later.
