Adult Learning Principles

Malcolm Knowles introduced the concept of Andragogy, which focuses on adult learning principles that include self-direction, prior experience, readiness, orientation, and motivation to learn. Learning professionals should incorporate these principles into the design and delivery of adult learning interventions to enhance effectiveness. Practical applications include allowing self-directed learning, peer mentoring, and creating a supportive learning environment.

4 Adult Learning Principles

Big Picture
Malcolm Shepherd Knowles (1913 – 1997) was an American educator who
used the term Andragogy as synonymous to the art and science of Adult
Learning.

Andragogy in Greek means the man-leading in comparison to pedagogy,

which in Greek means child-leading. However, it should be noticed that the
term pedagogy has been used since the Ancient Greek times.

It consists of 5 key assumptions affect the way adults learn:

• Self-Directed.
• Prior experience of the learner.
• Readiness to learn.
• Orientation to learning.
• Motivation to learn.

When to Use
All learning professionals must be aware of adult learning assumptions
& principles to be considered in any adult learning interventions design,
development & delivery in order to get the best impact out of these
interventions.

How to Use
In able to apply the 5 Key principles, you can follow the below suggestions:

• Allow your participants to create their own ground rules at the

beginning of the training course. Since adult learners are self-directed,
allow them to discover things on their own and even make mistakes.

• Incorporate peer-mentoring by pairing up those with more experience

with the newer, less knowledgeable trainees. Use icebreakers that will
reveal shared experiences.

• Only teach tasks that the attendees will use in their current [Link]
your trainees use the skills within 30 days of the training by following
up with their manager or supervisor. Point out why it’s important for
the trainees to learn the content.

• Make sure that adequate climate building is done before working on

the course content (e.g. icebreakers, energizers, and brainteasers).
Most people need to feel safe, secure, and comfortable before they can
give their full attention to [Link] early practice sessions that
are easier and more prompted than later sessions. As learners gain
proficiency, more complexities can be added to the practice session.

• Build practice sessions throughout the course rather than just at the
end, and use frequent small-group sessions. Include opportunities for
learners to express themselves, work together, and be active.

Summary
Effective adult learning programs leverage both instructive and facilitative
techniques to build new awareness, knowledge, skills, or attitudes and
provide adult learners with the ability to apply the new information to real-
life situations.
