Module 2

Module 2 of DSCI 5180 focuses on the estimation of confidence intervals, explaining the concept of confidence intervals and their calculation for population parameters, particularly the population mean. The module includes learning objectives such as defining confidence intervals, understanding t-distributions, and using Excel for calculations. Students are required to complete specific lessons and a quiz, utilizing provided materials like PowerPoints and worksheets.

Module 2: Overview

DSCI 5180MODULE 2: ESTIMATION OF CONFIDENCE INTERVALS

Overview

What is Estimation?

Though the Sample means (or sample-statistics, in general) represent the “best point values” for the
population means (or the parameters sought, in general), the chance of the sample mean being exactly
equal to the true mean is almost nil. But the fact that the sample mean is likely to be closer to the true
mean (rather than far from true mean), helps us construct so called Confidence Intervals. At one
extreme, we can be 0% confident of the single value (the sample mean) has returned us the true mean,
or be more confident that the true parameter value is within a range about it. The width of such range
(or interval) increases with any need for increasing the Confidence level.

Knowing the ranges of the distributions of the Normal curve from Module 1 enables us to construct the
Confidence Intervals or estimates of true parameter values about their estimated sample statistics, be
they means of some Normal distributions, or proportions.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

 Define confidence interval

 Calculate confidence interval of a population parameter - specifically Population mean

 Define a t-distribution or student t-distribution

 State the properties of student t-distribution

 Read a student t-distribution Table

 Use Excel (and Ti 83/84 calculator) to compute the calculated t and also be able to calculate it
manually

 Use tables to look up the critical t

 State the difference between sample and population

 Compute t-statistic

 Calculate confidence interval of a population mean of small samples i.e. sigma-unknown (t-
distribution)

 Compute sample size for a given confidence interval and population variance
 Compute confidence interval for a given variance and sample size
