Example 6

The document provides a detailed solution to an electrical engineering problem involving circuit analysis with given supply parameters, component values, and steps for calculating impedances, currents, voltages, and power. It includes calculations for branch impedances, total impedance, load current, and power delivered to the load. The final results include active and reactive power for both the load and the entire circuit.

Example 6 Solution
Given
Supply:
• 𝑉 = 120 V (rms), 𝑓 = 60 Hz
• 𝜔 = 2𝜋𝑓 = 377 rad/s
Component values
• 𝐿1 = 0.106 H
• 𝐿4 = 0.159 H
• 𝑅2 = 100Ω
• 𝐶2 = 37.89𝜇𝐹
• 𝑅3 = 30Ω
• Load: 𝑅𝐿 = 50Ω, 𝐶𝐿 = 106𝜇𝐹
Step 1: Convert all elements to impedances
Inductors
𝑋𝐿1 = 𝜔𝐿1 = 377 × 0.106 = 39.96Ω
𝑋𝐿4 = 𝜔𝐿4 = 377 × 0.159 = 59.94Ω
𝑍𝐿1 = 𝑗39.96, 𝑍𝐿4 = 𝑗59.94
Example 6 Solution
Capacitors
1 1
𝑋𝐶2 = = = 70.0Ω
𝜔𝐶2 377 × 37.89 × 10−6
1 1
𝑋𝐶𝐿 = = = 25.0Ω
𝜔𝐶𝐿 377 × 106 × 10−6
𝑍𝐶2 = −𝑗70, 𝑍𝐶𝐿 = −𝑗25

Step 2: Branch impedances

Middle branch
𝑍2 = 𝑅2 + 𝑍𝐶2 = 100 − 𝑗70

Load branch
𝑍𝐿 = 𝑅𝐿 + 𝑍𝐶𝐿 = 50 − 𝑗25

Step 3: Parallel combination

Parallel of middle branch and load branch:
𝑍2 𝑍𝐿
𝑍𝑝 =
𝑍2 + 𝑍𝐿
Example 6 Solution
(100 − 𝑗70)(50 − 𝑗25)
𝑍𝑝 =
(100 − 𝑗70) + (50 − 𝑗25)
𝑍𝑝 = 44.7 − 𝑗24.6 Ω

Step 4: Total impedance

Series elements:
𝑍𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 = 𝑗39.96 + 30 + 𝑗59.94 = 30 + 𝑗99.9
𝑍𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 𝑍𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 + 𝑍𝑝 = (30 + 44.7) + 𝑗(99.9 − 24.6)
𝑍𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 74.7 + 𝑗75.3

Step 5: Supply current

𝑉 120
𝐼= =
𝑍𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 74.7 + 𝑗75.3
𝐼 = 1.5426∠ − 12.614∘ A

Step 6: Load current

Voltage across parallel network:
𝑉𝑝 = 𝐼 × 𝑍𝑝
Example 6 Solution
𝑉𝑝 = (1.5426∠ − 12.614∘ )(51.1∠ − 28.9∘ )
𝑉𝑝 = 78.8∠ − 41.5∘ V
𝑉𝑝
𝐼𝐿 =
𝑍𝐿
𝐼𝐿 = 0.6672∠ − 40.48∘ A

Step 7: Load voltage

𝑉𝐿 = 𝐼𝐿 × 𝑍𝐿
𝑉𝐿 = 37.3∠ − 67.45∘ V

Step 8: Power delivered to the load

Active power
𝑃𝐿 = 𝐼𝐿2 𝑅𝐿
𝑃𝐿 = (0.6672)2 × 50 = 22.25 W
Example 6 Solution
Reactive power
𝑄𝐿 = 𝐼𝐿2 (−𝑋𝐶𝐿 )
𝑄𝐿 = −11.126 VAr (capacitive)

Step 9: Power of entire circuit

Apparent power
𝑆 = 𝑉𝐼 = 120 × 1.5426 = 185.112 VA

Active power
𝑃 = 180.64 W

Reactive power
𝑄 = 40.425 VAr (inductive)
