Security Basics – Interview Notes

1. Security
Protection of people, property, data, or systems from harm, loss, or unauthorized access.
Example: CCTV, passwords, fire alarms.

2. Vulnerability
A weakness or gap that can be exploited by a threat. Example: Weak password, unlocked
door.

3. Threat
Any event or person that can cause harm by exploiting a vulnerability. Example: Hacker,
fire, virus.

4. Hazardous
Something dangerous or likely to cause harm or injury. Example: Flammable materials,
chemicals.

5. Risk
The chance of a threat exploiting a vulnerability causing damage or loss. Formula: Risk =
Threat × Vulnerability × Impact.

6. Types of Risk Assessment


Qualitative Based on experience (low/medium/high).
Quantitative Uses numbers/data.
Generic Common hazards for similar tasks.
Site-specific For a particular location or job.
Dynamic Real-time assessment during changing conditions.

7. Difference Between Threat and Vulnerability
