THE PEOPLE OF VILLAGES, HILL AREAS

AND INTERIOR PLACE RESIDENTS
Context of the problem
[Link] and Social Impact: Limited access affects business,
education, and healthcare.
[Link] and Infrastructure: High costs and tough geography hinder
network expansion in rural areas.

[Link] Disparity: Rural areas struggle with limited network options

compared to urban areas.
Case study of the problem
Getting reliable network access in rural areas is a big problem. The low population and tough terrain
make it expensive and dif cult for companies to set up the necessary infrastructure, like cell towers
and internet cables. This often means that people in these areas have poor or no internet access.
This lack of connectivity affects daily life in several ways. Businesses struggle because they can’t
rely on the internet, which limits their growth and local economic opportunities. Students in rural
areas might not have the same online learning resources as those in cities, which can hurt their
education. Healthcare services also suffer, as people have less access to telemedicine, which can
delay important medical help.
To solve this problem, we need new technologies like satellite internet and community networks, and
support from the government. This way, we can help ensure that everyone has the internet access
they need for work, learning, and health.
fi
Speci ic problems faced by people
• Limited Educational Resources: Lack of access to online learning tools
and research materials.
• Economic Challenges: Dif culty in growing businesses and competing
without an online presence.
• Healthcare Access: Reduced ability to use telemedicine and access timely
medical consultations.
• Social Isolation: Dif culty staying connected with family and friends
through online platforms.
• Job Opportunities: Fewer remote work options and limited access to job
listings and training.

How did you identify this problem, and why is it
important to solve?
•Identi cation: The problem was identi ed through observations of rural
communities facing limited connectivity, feedback from residents, and
reports highlighting the impact of poor internet access on various aspects of
life.
•Importance: Solving this problem is crucial because reliable internet access
is essential for education, healthcare, economic growth, and social inclusion.
Without it, rural areas face signi cant disadvantages, exacerbating
inequalities and limiting opportunities for residents.

Objectives
-Improve Connectivity: Expand internet infrastructure to provide
reliable and high-speed access to rural areas.

-Enhance Access to Services: Ensure that rural residents can access

online education, telemedicine, and remote work opportunities.

-Foster Economic Growth: Support local businesses by enabling e-

commerce and online market access.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure:
Focuses on building resilient infrastructure, promoting
inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering
innovation, which aligns with improving internet access
in rural areas.
Existing solutions/products/services
•Satellite Internet: Providers like Starlink offer high-speed internet
through satellites.
•Community Networks: Local initiatives and non-pro ts create
community-based internet solutions.
•Government Programs: Various national and regional programs aim
to extend broadband infrastructure to underserved areas.

fi
Drawbacks in existing solutions/products/services

•High Costs: Satellite internet and extensive infrastructure projects can

be expensive for both providers and users.
•Limited Coverage: Some community networks and government
programs may not reach all rural areas or might have limited bandwidth.
•Technical Challenges: Rural areas may face dif culties with equipment
maintenance and service reliability due to harsh environmental
conditions.

fi
MARKET KNOWLEDGE
•Coverage Data: According to the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC), nearly 20% of rural Americans lack access to high-
speed internet.
•Market Growth: The global satellite internet market is projected to
grow signi cantly, yet penetration in remote areas remains uneven.
•Government Funding: The U.S. government has allocated billions of
dollars to improve rural broadband access through initiatives like the
Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF).
