Subject: English – Vocabulary


Grade Level: 8–9
Duration: 90 minutes (Beginning 10 min – Middle 70 min – Closing 10 min)

1. Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Understand the
meanings of new vocabulary words in context. 2. Use vocabulary words
correctly in sentences. 3. Classify vocabulary words according to meaning
and usage. 4. Apply new vocabulary in speaking and writing activities. 5.
Improve reading comprehension through vocabulary knowledge.

By the end of the lesson, I can: - Explain the meaning of new words. - Use
new vocabulary words in sentences. - Group words by topic or meaning. -
Use new words when speaking or writing.

A. Beginning Activity (10 minutes)

2. Ask students to guess the meanings using context or prior knowledge.
3. Briefly discuss guesses without correcting yet.
4. Explain that today’s lesson focuses on understanding and using new
vocabulary.

B. Middle Activities (70 minutes)


1. Vocabulary Introduction & Explanation (25 minutes)
 Introduce words in meaningful groups:
o Nature & Place: veld, horizon, atop
o Animals & Farming: herd-boy, cattle, calves, udder, weaned,
edible
o Objects & Actions: apron, slingshot, twine, sharpen, knock out
o Skills & Qualities: adept, essential, parrying, feinting, footwork,
opponent
o Abstract Ideas: mystical, attachment, wealth, transform,
remain, hardly, discovered
 Give simple definitions and example sentences.

2. Guided Practice: Matching & Sorting (15 minutes)


 Students match words with meanings.
 Sort words into categories (noun, verb, adjective / topic groups).
 Check answers together.

3. Context Practice (15 minutes)


 Students complete sentences using the correct vocabulary word.
 Discuss why each word fits the sentence.

4. Independent Practice: Sentence Creation (15 minutes)


 Students choose 8–10 words and write original sentences.
 Encourage correct spelling and meaning.
 Teacher circulates to support.

C. Closing Activity (10 minutes)


1. Review key vocabulary by quick oral questioning.
2. Ask students to share one new word they found interesting.
3. Summarize the importance of learning vocabulary for reading and
writing.

5. Differentiation

o Provide simplified definitions and picture support
o Allow sentence frames
 Core:
o Write correct sentences using new vocabulary
 Extension:
o Write a short paragraph using at least five vocabulary words
o Use words in a short dialogue or story
