Tutorial 2

The document contains a series of fluid mechanics tutorial questions involving various scenarios such as pressure calculations in cylindrical tanks, the opening of gates in tanks with different liquids, forces on doors, and buoyancy effects on submerged objects. Each question requires specific calculations based on given parameters like pressure, density, and geometry. The problems are designed to test the understanding of fluid statics and dynamics principles.

Tutorial 2 Fluid Mechanics CLL231

Question 1

A closed cylindrical tank filled with water has a hemispherical dome and is connected to an
inverted piping system as shown in figure below. The liquid in the top part of the piping system
has a specific gravity of 0.8, and the remaining parts of the system are filled with water. If the
pressure gage reading at A is 60 kPa, determine: (a) the pressure in pipe B, and (b) the pressure
head, in millimeters of mercury, at the top of the dome (point C).

Question 2

An open tank has a vertical partition and on one side contains gasoline with a density r ρ = 700
kg/m3 at a depth of 4 m, as shown in the figure below. A rectangular gate that is 4 m high and 2
m wide and hinged at one end is located in the partition. Water is slowly added to the empty side
of the tank. At what depth, h, will the gate start to open?

Question 3

A container manufactured to store bags of ice is sketched in Figure 2.16a. As shown, the slanted
surface contains an access door; how well it seals when closed must be tested. The method
involves filling the container with water to a predetermined depth. Calculate the force exerted on
the door and the location of the force for H = 70 cm and θ = 50°.
Question 4

A 6-ft-diameter drainage conduit of the type shown in Fig. a below is half full of water at rest, as
shown in Fig. b below. below. Determine the magnitude and line of action of the resultant force
that the water exerts on a 1-ft length of the curved section BC of the conduit wall.

Question 5

A tank of cross-sectional area 𝐴 is filled with a liquid of specific weight 𝛾1. Determine the liquid
level rise (Δℎ) when a cylinder of specific weight 𝛾2 and volume 𝑉 is floated in the liquid as
shown in the figure.
Question 6

The 0.4-lb lead fish sinker shown in Fig. a is attached to a fishing line as shown in Fig. b. The
specific gravity of the sinker is 𝑆𝐺sinker = 11.3. Determine the difference between the tension in
the line above and below the sinker.
