END SEMESTER ASSESSMENT (ESA) - JULY - 2023

UE21BT241B - Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

Total Marks : 100.0

1.a. A stone of 20 kg mass and a tank containing 200 kg water comprise a

system. The stone is 15 m above the water level initially. The stone and water
are at same temperature initially. If the stone falls into water, then
determine change in Internal energy, change in potential energy, change in
kinetic energy, heat and work transfers when
a) the stone is about to enter water
b) the stone has come to rest in the tank
c) the heat is transferred to the surroundings in such an amount that the
stone & water come to their initial temperature
(6.0 Marks)

1.b. Derive the equation for the first law of thermodynamics for a steady
state, steady- flow process in an open system having one inlet and one exit.
List the assumptions made (6.0 Marks)

1.c. Differentiate between

i) State & path functions
ii) Homogeneous & heterogenous systems
iii) State & properties
iv) Reversible & irreversible process (8.0 Marks)
2.a. Define fugacity and fugacity coefficient of a component. How can it be
determined using equation of state? Explain Maxwells equations using
fundamental property relations.
(10.0 Marks)

2.b. Explain in detail about the effect of temperature on equilibrium constant

for a chemical reaction.
(10.0 Marks)

3.a. With a Neat Sketch, Arrive at an expression for Heat Flow through a
thick-walled cylinder
(10.0 Marks)

3.b. Consider a hollow sphere of inner radius of 10 cm and an outer radius of

20 cm with a thermal conductivity of 40 W/(m-K). The inner surface is heated
uniformly at a constant rate of 1.6 x 105 W/m2 by means of an electric heater
while the outer surface is maintained at 00C. Calculate the temperature at
the inner surface of the sphere. (10.0 Marks)

4.a. Cold fluid is flowing through the heat exchanger at a rate of 15 m3/h. It
enters the heat exchanger at 303 K and leaves at 328 K. A hot thermic fluid
enters
the heat exchanger at a rate of 21 m3/h at a temperature of 388 K. Find the
area of heat transfer required assuming the flow to be counter current and
overall heat transfer coefficient be 3490 W/(m2K)
Data:
Density of cold fluid = 1000 kg/m3
Density of thermic fluid = 950 kg/m3
Specific heat of cold fluid = 4.187 kJ/(kgK)
Specific heat of thermic fluid = 2.93 kJ/(kgK)
(10.0 Marks)

4.b. Differentiate between Dropwise and Filmwise Condensation

(10.0 Marks)

5.a. Calculate the Rate of Heat Loss from a Thermoflask if the polished
silvered surfaces have emissivity of 0.05, the liquid in the flask is at 368 K and
the casing is at 293 K. Calculate the loss of both surfaces were black. Stefan
Boltzmann Constant is 5.67 × 10-8 W/(m2K4) (10.0 Marks)

5.b. Determine the net radiant heat exchange between two parallel oxidized
iron plates, placed at a distance of 25 mm having sides 3mx3m. The surface
temperatures of the two plates are 373K and 313K respectively. Emissivity of
the plates are equal. Given e1=e2=0.736 (10.0 Marks)
