Probability Questions

The document contains a series of probability questions across two sections. Section A includes problems related to specializations, employee qualifications, machine defects, coin and die outcomes, and card probabilities. Section B focuses on probabilities related to public transport usage among employees, student exam performance, defect rates from machines and suppliers, and the accuracy of a medical test.

Q1. A student can choose only one specialisation:

• Finance: 0.40
• Marketing: 0.35

Find the probability that a randomly selected student chooses Finance or Marketing.

Q2. In a company:

• Probability an employee is a graduate = 0.60

• Probability that an employee has work experience = 0.45
• Probability that an employee is both a graduate and experienced = 0.30

Find the probability that an employee is a graduate or experienced.

Q3. Two machines operate independently.

• Probability Machine A produces a defective item = 0.04

• Probability Machine B produces a defective item = 0.05

Find the probability that both machines produce defective items.

Q4. A fair coin is tossed, and a fair die is rolled.

Find the probability of getting:

1. Head and a number greater than 4

2. Tail and an even number

Q5. From a deck of 52 playing cards, one card is drawn.

Find the probability that the card is:

1. A King or a Heart
2. A King and a Heart

SECTION B:
Q6. In a survey of 200 employees:

• 120 are males

• 80 are females
• 50 males and 30 females use public transport

If an employee is selected at random:

1. Find the probability that the employee uses public transport, given that the employee
is male.
2. Find the probability that the employee uses public transport, given that the employee
is female.

Q7. In a class:

• 70% students passed Mathematics

• 60% students passed Statistics
• 45% students passed both

Find:

1. The probability that a student passed Mathematics given that they passed Statistics
2. Probability that a student passed Statistics, given that they passed Mathematics

Q8. A factory has two machines:

• Machine A produces 65% of the output with a defect rate of 3%

• Machine B produces 35% of the output with a defect rate of 6%

An item selected at random is found defective.

Find the probability that it was produced by Machine B.

Q9. Three suppliers supply a raw material:

• Supplier X: 50% (defect rate 2%)

• Supplier Y: 30% (defect rate 4%)
• Supplier Z: 20% (defect rate 5%)

If a randomly selected item is defective, find the probability that it came from Supplier Y.

Q10. A medical test detects a disease with:

• 95% accuracy when the disease is present

• 90% accuracy when the disease is absent
• Probability of disease in population = 4%

If a person tests positive, find the probability that the person actually has the disease.
