Introduction
Sugary drinks are at the bottom of the list of beverages that are best for our health because they
contain so many calories and almost no other nutrients. People who drink sugary beverages do not
feel as full as if they had consumed the same number of calories from solid food, and studies show
that they do not compensate for the high caloric content of these beverages by eating less food. A
can of sugar-sweetened soda or fruit punch contains about 150 calories, almost all of which come
from added sugar. Did you know that if you drank just one of these sugary drinks every day without
reducing your calorie intake elsewhere, you could gain up to 5 pounds in a year? Aside from weight
gain, drinking these sugar-laden beverages on a regular basis can increase the risk of type 2
diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic diseases. Furthermore, increased consumption of sugary
beverages has been linked to an increased risk of dying prematurely.
In addition, increased sugar consumption has been linked to the emergence and prevalence of
dyslipidaemia, fatty liver disease, hyperuricemia, and insulin resistance. These conditions reduce
BMI, which can lead to diabetes or heart disease. As a result, the increased risk of obesity, the first
serious repercussion of sugar abuse, can precipitate other serious health problems. When you drink
a sugary beverage, it quickly enters your bloodstream and raises your glucose levels much faster
than eating the same number of calories from solid food. When your body has more blood sugar
than it can use for energy, the excess glucose is converted to body fat. Furthermore, drinking
enough water also beneficial towards our health because it helps to flush out our system.
Researchers have stated that everyone should drink at least 8 glasses of water daily long with no
more than 10grams of sugar. This is because it helps us as individual to keep our body hydrated and
able to function at its fullest. This topic was chosen as a result in the vast consumption of sugary
drink consume by students at Greater Portmore high that can jeopardize students’ health in many
ways. The purpose of this SBA is to determine how many sugary drink and water do students
consume daily, the type of sugary drink they consume along with identifying some health issue that
can arise if one continually drinks sugary drink. A questionnaire will be handed out to 30 students
at the Greater Portmore high school.
3
Method of data collection
I observed majority of students at Greater Portmore High School, and it is clear that they consume
more than two sugary drinks during lunch time. The researcher had the idea to conduct an
investigation by gathering 30 students from different grades to fill out a questionnaire with 10
questions; this is to see how much sugary drink and water students consume on a daily/weekly
basis and along with some health issues that can arise if too much sugary drink is being consumed.
A questionnaire is a research instrument composed of a series of questions designed to elicit
information from respondents through a survey or statistical study. This method of data collection
(questionnaire) was chosen because it does not require an immediate response and requires students
to analyse questions before making a decision.
Benefits of questionnaires
1. Little amount of time to be completed.
2. Cost effective.
3. The results that are collected will be easily quantifiable.
Furthermore, the data will be gathered and represented using tables, graphs, and calculations to
assess the amount of sugary drink and water consumption by students along with health issues that
is being attach if too much sugary drink is being consumed.

Presentation of data
This section consist of tables, graph and calculations for the data collected to verify the amount of
sugary drink and water consumed by students on a daily/weekly basis. Thirty (30) students
participated in the survey. All students completed the survey honestly.
Table 1: This depicts the number of students who consume sugary drink on a daily/weekly basis
along with the percentage.

Once per day 2 2/30 x 100 = 6.67%
Twice per day 10 10/30 x 100 = 33.33%

Analysis of data
We cannot survive without water. It is essential for numerous bodily processes, such as supplying
nutrition to cells, eliminating waste, safeguarding joints and organs, and regulating body
temperature. Your go-to beverage should almost always be water.
Figure 1.
The data above shows that 6.67% of students consume at least one sugar drink per day. Only 3.33%
of students do not consume which leaves 100% of students consuming sugar drinks on a daily or
weekly basis. The preferred sugar drinks by students is Pepsi. 43.33% of the students consume
Pepsi, 33.33% of students consume Icool, 16.67% of students consume orange juice and 23.33% of
students consume other sugar drinks. Although orange drinks might sound healthy but these drinks
contain a lot of sugar which could cause diabetes, this is probably why 46% of students have
diabetes. 43.33 of the students consume Pepsi. Majority of the students consume sugar drinks.
Figure 2.
Discussion:
In the research I wanted to find out how many sugar drinks students consume and how it can cause
them to have diabetes. I found that most students consume sugar drinks. I also found that the
majority of the students consume sugar drinks daily or on a weekly basis. A total of 100% of the
students consume sugar drinks only 23.33% of the students consume other drinks. The other’s
students consume sodas and other drinks. Although the majority of students don’t have diabetes.
Only 46 percent of students have diabetes which means that sugar drinks can contribute to the
growing rates of diabetes in the student population.
7
Conclusion
We can conclude that the majority of students consume sugar drinks daily or weekly. Most of the
students consume Pepsi. Sugar drinks do contribute to diabetes among students.
